Position Summary

The Community Recreation Assistant plays a vital role in assisting the Parks & Recreation Department with the organization, execution, and facilitation of diverse recreational programs, community events, and activities for individuals of all ages. This position operates under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor.

This role requires a flexible schedule, including availability on weekends and holidays as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, development, and delivery of recreational programs, events, and activities, including sports leagues, fitness classes, arts and crafts, and special community events.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries, offering information, and assisting with program registrations.
  • Set up and maintain recreational facilities, equipment, and supplies to ensure a safe and inviting environment for participants.
  • Supervise and monitor program participants to ensure their safety and adherence to departmental policies and guidelines.
  • Help organize and promote recreational events through marketing materials and community outreach.
  • Maintain accurate records and assist with administrative tasks, such as attendance tracking and program evaluations.
  • Collaborate with other department staff and volunteers to coordinate and support various activities.
  • Respond to emergency situations and administer basic first aid as required, following departmental protocols.
  • Keep the program area clean and organized, ensuring all equipment is in good working order.
  • Attend training sessions and staff meetings to stay informed about departmental policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Prepare activities for before and after school care or day camps.
  • Assist in creating promotional materials as assigned.
  • Ensure necessary supplies are stocked for scheduled activities.
  • Support facility cleanliness and report any maintenance issues to the supervisor.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with the public, coworkers, and program participants.
  • Attend all assigned meetings and events.
  • Perform emergency response tasks and assignments as directed.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Certification, and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Previous experience in recreational activities, customer service, or a related field is preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (or the ability to obtain within six months of employment).
  • Lifeguard certification is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of recreational activities and safety protocols.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Reliable, responsible, and capable of working independently as well as part of a team.
  • Interest in recreation and community events.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and practices.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Self-motivated and proactive.
  • Ability to manage routine administrative tasks and work with various office equipment and software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all program participants, coworkers, and the general public.
  • A commitment to promoting community well-being and supporting the mission of the Parks & Recreation Department.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Tasks may involve stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and balancing.
  • Physical ability to set up equipment, stand for extended periods, and lift moderate weights.

Environmental Requirements:

  • Ability to perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.

Sensory Requirements:

  • Tasks require sound perception and discrimination.
  • Tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
  • Tasks require effective oral communication abilities.
