Position Overview:

This position is pivotal in overseeing operational risk management activities tailored to Discover Network. Responsibilities include providing counsel, evaluating, and constructively challenging all operational risks and their mitigations in relation to the specific business, ensuring alignment with risk appetite and business objectives. As an individual contributor, you will collaborate with business leaders, control leaders, and other risk management professionals to ensure the successful execution of enterprise and operational risk strategies. A key aspect of this role involves establishing a robust second line of defense through monitoring, testing, and operational risk evaluations to uphold effective risk management practices and a solid control environment.

Additionally, you will engage with and influence stakeholders at various organizational levels, escalate risks as necessary, actively participate in governance committees, and may interact with regulatory bodies alongside management. This role may also involve contributing to cross-functional Non-Financial Risk department projects and providing ad hoc analyses and reports to senior leadership regarding operational risks. Collaboration with colleagues across Operational Risk Oversight, Non-Financial Risk Management, Corporate Risk Management, and other business units is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement a risk-based approach to independent risk evaluations and oversight for the business, ensuring effective governance and leveraging insights from testing to foster a strong risk and control environment.
  • Provide operational risk advisory services and constructive challenges for various Non-Financial Risk Programs.
  • Engage with business leaders in governance discussions to promote a culture of effective risk management.
  • Prepare and present status reports on program initiatives, activities, and non-financial risks to management and committees, highlighting concerns and achievements.
  • Continuously update and communicate the status of program initiatives and non-financial risks to management and relevant committees.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or management.
  • 6+ years of experience in Law, Risk, or Operations.
  • 3+ years in a first or second-line risk, control, or compliance role within a highly regulated financial institution.
  • Alternatively, 10+ years of risk management experience in a regulated financial or depository environment, focusing on operational risk management, internal audit, or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of risk management experience in a financial setting, with a specific emphasis on operational risk management or internal audit.
