Position Overview

The Medical Risk Underwriter plays a crucial role in evaluating medical risk for a PEO-sponsored medical plan. This position operates within defined limits of authority on assignments that require substantial technical complexity and coordination. The underwriter employs underwriting policies and guidelines, rating rules, and carrier regulations to accurately price medical risk.

Key Responsibilities


- Gather and analyze customer-specific data, including existing group medical plans and rates, employee census, carrier history, and prior claim experience to ensure the completeness and accuracy of submissions.

- Collaborate with Sales and support teams to confirm that all necessary materials for quoting are obtained. The ability to clearly and promptly communicate any missing items or discrepancies is essential.


- Calculate rates for intricate group cases through comprehensive analysis of the group's experience, industry, location, size, and demographic characteristics using established underwriting methodologies.


- Develop the judgment necessary to evaluate new business for master medical plans as required, working alongside senior underwriters or management to maintain a profitable book of business.

- Review and address all sales requests and inquiries in accordance with company standards and policy guidelines.

- Update all underwriting systems as necessary.

- Share underwriting knowledge and provide education to peers and/or members of the sales team.


- Familiarize oneself with plan offerings, internal relationships, underwriting and team guidelines, processes, procedures, and the overall business strategy of the company.

- Exhibit strong attention to detail while also being able to transition quickly between tasks as required. Proficiency in utilizing multiple systems/programs simultaneously is necessary.

- Demonstrate effective multi-tasking abilities, managing and prioritizing several incoming requests in a dynamic environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Proficient in using a computer, keyboard, and screens to access necessary information for performing essential duties and responsibilities.

- Capable of reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.


- Ability to compose routine reports and correspondence, and communicate effectively with company employees, managers, and both internal and external customers and vendors.


- Competent in basic arithmetic operations and able to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.

- Ability to apply common sense understanding to execute instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form. Capable of addressing problems involving variables in standardized situations.

- Able to work under direction and collaborate effectively with all areas of the company, including management and peers.

- Excellent time management, resource management, and planning skills.

- Impeccable attention to detail.

Possesses a proactive professional demeanor with a high standard of quality, a strong work ethic, and assertiveness in a positive manner.

Education & Experience

- High School Diploma required; Associate's degree preferred or equivalent experience.

- Preferred 2+ years of experience in insurance carrier underwriting.

- Preferred 2+ years of experience in PEO underwriting.

- Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

- Familiarity with an office environment is beneficial.
