Position Overview
The Health Underwriter plays a crucial role in evaluating medical risk associated with a PEO-sponsored medical plan. This position operates within defined authority limits on assignments that demand significant technical expertise and coordination. The Health Underwriter employs underwriting policies, guidelines, rating rules, and carrier regulations to accurately price medical risk.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and analyze customer-specific data, including existing group medical plans, rates, employee census, carrier history, and prior claim experiences to ensure submission accuracy and completeness.
- Collaborate with Sales and support teams to guarantee that all necessary documentation for quoting is obtained. Communicate effectively to clarify any missing items or discrepancies in submissions.
- Calculate rates for complex group cases through a detailed analysis of the group's experience, industry, location, size, and demographic characteristics using established underwriting methodologies.
- Develop the judgment required to assess new business for master medical plans in collaboration with senior underwriters or management, ensuring a profitable portfolio.
- Review and fulfill all sales requests and inquiries in accordance with company standards and policy guidelines.
- Update all relevant underwriting systems as necessary.
- Share underwriting knowledge and provide education to peers and/or members of the sales team.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Proficient in using a computer, keyboard, and screens to access necessary information for performing essential duties.
- Ability to read and interpret various documents, including safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Competence in writing routine reports and correspondence, and effectively communicating with company employees, managers, and external customers.
- Strong mathematical skills to perform basic calculations and understand ratios and percentages.
- Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form, and to manage problems involving variables in standardized situations.
- Excellent time management, resource management, and planning capabilities.
- Attention to detail and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma required; Associate's degree preferred or equivalent experience.
- Preferred experience of 2+ years in insurance carrier underwriting.
- Preferred experience of 2+ years in PEO underwriting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; familiarity with an office environment is essential.
