The Senior Mortgage Underwriter is tasked with the assessment, examination, and decision-making regarding loan applications in accordance with established underwriting standards and protocols. This role involves determining necessary documentation and conditions for loans while engaging directly with relevant parties to address any stipulations. You will also assist team members with files that exceed standard approval criteria and exceptions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct in-depth analysis of complex financial and credit data in line with internal underwriting criteria, investor requirements, and regulatory mandates.
- Underwrite a diverse range of products and loan types with significant credit exposure, including exceptions not resolved through automated systems.
- Gather, evaluate, and document loan data, credit risk, borrower, and property details.
- Review intricate loans that necessitate exceptions.
- Ensure effective communication with processors, underwriters, mortgage professionals, and borrowers regarding required documents for mortgage loan files to facilitate swift processing.
- Provide mentorship and support to junior underwriters to enhance their performance and development.
- Comply with all relevant internal policies and procedures, safeguarding the confidentiality of borrower information.
- Guide junior underwriters in performing various administrative tasks to support operations.
- May oversee the work of others in the absence of the Underwriting Manager, ensuring the team has the necessary resources and support to make informed loan decisions.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with coursework relevant to the position.
- Consideration will be given to equivalent combinations of experience and education demonstrating the ability to fulfill the essential functions of the role.
- Advanced analytical skills in credit assessment, layered risk evaluation, and income verification.
- Ability to underwrite loans on a national scale across various markets.
- FHA - Direct Endorsement (DE) designation is mandatory.
- VA - Lender Appraisal Processing Program (LAPP) and/or Staff Appraisal Reviewer (SAR) designations are preferred.
- Experience with Desktop Underwriter (DU) or similar automated underwriting systems is essential.
- Basic computer proficiency is required.
- Familiarity with word processing software is advantageous.
- Experience with TMO is preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years in mortgage underwriting or lending, including at least 1 year in a lead or supervisory capacity.
