Position Overview

The Health Underwriter plays a crucial role in evaluating medical risk for a PEO-sponsored medical plan. This position operates within defined limits of authority on tasks that require considerable technical complexity and coordination. The underwriter applies underwriting policies and guidelines, rating rules, and carrier regulations to accurately assess medical risk pricing.

Key Responsibilities


- Gather and analyze customer-specific data, including existing group medical plans, rates, employee census, carrier history, and prior claims experience to ensure the accuracy and completeness of submissions.

- Collaborate with Sales and support teams to confirm that all necessary materials for quoting are obtained. Must effectively communicate any missing items or discrepancies.


- Calculate rates for intricate group cases based on a comprehensive analysis of the group's experience, industry, location, size, and demographic characteristics using established underwriting methodologies.


- Develop the judgment necessary to evaluate new business for master medical plans as required, working alongside senior underwriters or management to maintain a profitable portfolio.

- Review and address all sales requests and inquiries in accordance with company standards and policy guidelines.

- Update all relevant underwriting systems as needed.

- Share underwriting expertise and provide training to peers and/or members of the sales team.


- Familiarize oneself with plan offerings, internal relationships, underwriting and team guidelines, processes, procedures, and the company's business strategy and structure.

- Exhibit attention to detail while being adaptable to switch between tasks as necessary. Proficiency in utilizing multiple systems/programs simultaneously is essential.

- Possess strong multi-tasking abilities, managing and prioritizing several incoming requests in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

- Proficient in using a computer, keyboard, and screens to access essential information for performing duties.

- Capable of reading and interpreting documents such as safety regulations, operating instructions, and procedural manuals.


- Skilled in writing routine reports and correspondence, and communicating effectively with company employees, managers, and external customers and vendors.


- Competent in basic arithmetic operations and able to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.

- Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Able to address problems involving variables in standardized situations.

- Work effectively under direction and collaborate well with all departments, including management and peers.

- Excellent time management, resource management, and planning capabilities.

- Exceptional attention to detail.

Education & Experience

- High School Diploma required; Associate's degree preferred or equivalent experience.

- Preferred 2+ years of underwriting experience with an insurance carrier.

- Preferred 2+ years of PEO underwriting experience.

- Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

- Familiarity with an office environment.
