Position Summary:

The Assistant Phlebotomy Supervisor plays a crucial role in supporting the Phlebotomy Supervisor with the training and management of laboratory personnel. This position involves executing laboratory protocols as prescribed by healthcare providers, ensuring the collection of suitable specimens in accordance with established laboratory standards while adhering to aseptic techniques and OSHA bloodborne pathogen regulations. Familiarity with OSHA and CLIA guidelines is essential. The role may require travel to various locations within the service area.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Phlebotomy Supervisor in scheduling staff to maintain adequate coverage during operational hours.
  2. Ensure adherence to clinical, operational, and Human Resources policies, procedures, and standards. Uphold the corporate mission, vision, and values.
  3. Support the Phlebotomy Supervisor in managing daily laboratory and office functions, including staff selection, orientation, training, and oversight.
  4. Help manage administrative tasks such as payroll and tracking employee leave.
  5. Provide training to laboratory assistants on established procedures and protocols.
  6. Accurately identify patients and provide necessary care instructions. Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures, ensuring proper specimen labeling and testing.
  7. Maintain knowledge of Point of Care testing and CLIA waived procedures.
  8. Keep precise patient logs, documenting relevant information such as test orders and laboratory details.
  9. Utilize appropriate requisition forms with complete patient and billing information.
  10. Follow established billing and sample handling procedures as directed by reference laboratories.
  11. Conduct daily maintenance, quality control, and assurance activities, along with sample analysis.
  12. Review and report patient test results using laboratory equipment and testing kits.
  13. Document physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
  14. Collaborate with the Supervisor to ensure adequate staffing levels across designated locations.
  15. Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.

Qualifications:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience as a Phlebotomist.
  • 1 to 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Understanding of laboratory safety protocols and universal precautions.
  • Proficiency in the operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Familiarity with laboratory regulatory standards is preferred.
  • Skill in the accurate collection of specimens.
  • Ability to adhere to laboratory procedures and policies.
  • Competence in laboratory software applications.
  • Professionalism and tact in patient interactions.

Travel Requirements: Regular travel to various laboratory sites may be necessary.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required. An Associate Degree or completion of a Vocational School program in phlebotomy from an accredited institution is preferred. Licensure, registry, or certification such as ASCP is also preferred.
