Position Summary:

The Assistant Phlebotomy Supervisor plays a crucial role in supporting the Phlebotomy Supervisor in training and managing the laboratory staff. This position is responsible for executing laboratory procedures as directed by healthcare providers, ensuring the collection of appropriate specimens in accordance with established laboratory protocols while adhering to aseptic techniques and OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards. Familiarity with OSHA and CLIA regulations is essential. The role may require travel to various locations within the service area.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Phlebotomy Supervisor in staff scheduling to maintain adequate coverage during operational hours.
  2. Ensure adherence to clinical, operational, and Human Resources policies, procedures, and standards.
  3. Support the Phlebotomy Supervisor in overseeing daily laboratory operations, including staffing, candidate selection, orientation, training, and supervision of personnel.
  4. Assist in administrative tasks such as payroll management and tracking employee leave records.
  5. Provide training to laboratory assistants on proper procedures and protocols.
  6. Accurately identify patients and provide appropriate care instructions.
  7. Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures, ensuring proper specimen identification and labeling.
  8. Conduct laboratory tests on collected specimens and maintain accurate patient logs.
  9. Utilize reference laboratory requisitions, ensuring all patient and billing information is complete.
  10. Follow established billing procedures and sample handling protocols.
  11. Conduct daily maintenance, quality control, and quality assurance activities.
  12. Review and report test results using laboratory instruments and kits.
  13. Document physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
  14. Collaborate with the Supervisor to ensure adequate staffing levels at various locations.
  15. Maintain regular and consistent attendance.

Qualifications:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience as a Phlebotomist.
  • 1 to 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and universal precautions.
  • Proficiency in the use of laboratory equipment.
  • Familiarity with laboratory regulatory requirements is preferred.
  • Skill in the proper collection of specimens and adherence to laboratory protocols.
  • Proficient in laboratory software applications.
  • Ability to interact with patients professionally and tactfully.

Travel Requirements: Regular travel to various laboratory locations may be necessary.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required. An Associate Degree or completion of a Vocational School program in phlebotomy from an accredited institution is preferred, along with relevant licensure or certification.
