Position Summary:

The Phlebotomy Assistant Supervisor plays a crucial role in supporting the Phlebotomy Supervisor in training and overseeing laboratory staff. This position involves executing laboratory procedures as directed by healthcare providers, ensuring the collection of suitable specimens in accordance with established laboratory protocols while adhering to aseptic techniques and OSHA bloodborne pathogen regulations. Familiarity with OSHA and CLIA standards is essential. This role may require travel to various locations within the service area.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Phlebotomy Supervisor in managing staff schedules to maintain adequate coverage during operational hours.
  2. Ensure adherence to clinical, operational, and Human Resources policies, regulations, and standards. Uphold and promote the organization's mission, vision, and values.
  3. Support the Phlebotomy Supervisor in overseeing daily laboratory and office functions, including staffing, candidate selection, orientation, training, and supervision of personnel.
  4. Assist with administrative tasks such as payroll processing and tracking employee leave records.
  5. Provide training to laboratory assistants on established procedures and protocols at designated sites.
  6. Accurately identify patients and provide appropriate care instructions. Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures, ensuring proper specimen labeling and conducting necessary laboratory tests.
  7. Maintain patient logs with essential details including date, patient name, lab accession number, and tests ordered.
  8. Utilize appropriate laboratory requisitions that include patient demographics, billing information, and diagnosis codes.
  9. Follow established billing protocols and sample handling procedures as directed by reference laboratories.
  10. Conduct daily maintenance, quality control, and quality assurance activities.
  11. Review and report test results accurately using laboratory instruments and test kits.
  12. Document physician orders in the accession log and maintain accurate patient charts.
  13. Collaborate with the Supervisor to ensure adequate staffing levels at various locations.
  14. Consistently report to work as scheduled.

Qualifications:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience as a Phlebotomist.
  • 1 to 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and universal precautions.
  • Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment.
  • Familiarity with laboratory regulatory requirements is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill in specimen collection techniques.
  • Ability to adhere to laboratory procedures and policies.
  • Competence in laboratory software applications.
  • Professionalism and tact when interacting with patients.

Travel Requirements: Regular travel to various laboratory locations may be necessary.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required. An Associate Degree or completion of a Vocational School program in phlebotomy from an accredited institution is preferred. Licensure, registry, or certification from ASCP or a similar organization is also preferred.
