Job Description Overview

Responsibilities:

  1. Register all specimens received from outreach patients, ensuring accurate and complete information is captured.
  2. Accurately request laboratory tests using correct coding and generate computer labels containing patient/specimen information.
  3. Properly identify, label, and process specimens, creating batches as needed.
  4. Prioritize specimens during peak workload periods to ensure timely processing.
  5. Monitor specimen tracking boards and shipping batches, following up on missing or overdue specimens.
  6. Adhere to safety procedures for equipment and handling of hazardous materials.
  7. Provide exceptional customer service, responding to inquiries and resolving issues in a timely manner.
  8. Monitor failed fax/failed scheduled report printer and address issues promptly, including working with IT staff to resolve software or hardware issues.
  9. Disseminate patient results in the manner requested by each customer.
  10. Receive physician orders for laboratory services via telephone/fax, complete requisition forms, and distribute forms for anticipated patient visits.
  11. Create/maintain manifests and home draw work orders for efficient collection of specimens from home-bound patients.
  12. Respond to requests for additional and/or stat services, delegating to the appropriate outreach phlebotomist as needed.
  13. Dispatch and prioritize courier services and client supply requests in a timely manner.
  14. Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development as outlined in performance reviews.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate required; medical terminology preferred.
  • One to three years of experience in a healthcare environment preferred, with experience working with internal and external customers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Keyboarding skills required; familiarity with general laboratory procedures (e.g. centrifugation, specimen handling) preferred.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills required; appropriate telephone etiquette required.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.
