Position Title: Fresh Foods Category Specialist / Manager of Fresh Food Categories

Department: Fresh Foods / Food Service

Position Overview:

The individual in this role will be tasked with the development and oversight of various fresh food initiatives throughout the organization. This includes collaborating on the planning and execution of all category-related functions, which encompass vendor collaborations, pricing strategies, product innovation, forecasting, reporting, merchandising, and, crucially, driving financial growth within designated categories. The selected candidate will serve as the authority in their specific areas of focus, working across departments to establish the most effective market strategies for the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and manage product selections, ensuring they resonate with our clientele and leverage product and category trends, along with significant new item introductions.
  • Employ strong analytical capabilities to enhance category performance.
  • Engage proactively with vendors to cultivate relationships and refine product offerings.
  • Adhere to established protocols for introducing and phasing out items, while recommending improvements where necessary.
  • In addition to overseeing national brands, identify and initiate the development of relevant private label opportunities.
  • Retail Pricing: Propose, establish, and manage retail pricing based on the role of products and categories, ensuring competitiveness while achieving budgeted margin rates. Collaborate with vendors to negotiate support and secure appropriate costs for key items.
  • Cost Pricing: Maintain strong negotiations with vendors to secure optimal costs and foster robust vendor relationships.
  • Negotiate supply, cost, and marketing fund agreements with vendors as required.
  • Collaborate with vendors to create compelling promotional activities, negotiating substantial funding support.
  • Ensure adherence to promotional timelines and compliance with accounting processes.
  • Conduct pre- and post-promotional analyses to refine future promotional efforts.
  • Work with advertising teams for promotional signage and any necessary special support.
  • Proactively collaborate with merchandising to enhance product offerings and presentations, determining optimal display and sales strategies.
  • Continuously optimize range and space configurations based on market trends and new product introductions.
  • Collaborate with merchandising and vendors to develop planogram updates, ensuring that major resets are meticulously planned and executed.
  • Engage in proactive financial management, reviewing profit/margin reports and sales data against budgetary expectations to ensure strong performance, making recommendations for necessary adjustments to address any discrepancies.
  • Maximize category potential by identifying opportunities and addressing weaknesses through thorough analysis of category performance, internal and industry sales data, and vendor insights, including best practices across trade channels to ensure alignment with market trends.
  • Stay updated on performance trends, competitive landscape, and regional preferences relevant to fresh foods and QSR brand inclusion.
  • Collaborate with training and development teams to ensure comprehensive training and evaluation of all team members within the fresh foods sector.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work cross-functionally across multiple departments to facilitate collaboration and execution.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a business or marketing-related field.
  • 2+ years of progressive experience in QSR restaurant brand relationships or category management.
  • Working knowledge of the C-Store industry within food service or related sectors.
  • Proven track record of leading organizational change.
  • Experience in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willingness to travel independently up to 25% of the time.
  • Capability to maneuver and regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, with frequent lifting or moving of up to 40 pounds.

Desired Experience/Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of category management experience, particularly in Food Service.
  • Familiarity with PDI reporting systems and data insight resources.
  • Experience in Proprietary, QSR, or Food Service Development and Innovation.
