Position Overview:

The Fresh Foods Category Strategist is accountable for the development and oversight of various fresh food initiatives throughout the organization. This role involves collaborating on the execution of all category-related functions, which encompass vendor collaborations, pricing strategies, product innovation, forecasting, reporting, merchandising, and driving financial growth within the designated categories. The selected candidate will serve as the authority in their specific categories, partnering with departments to establish the most effective market entry strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and curate product selections, ensuring they resonate with customer preferences while leveraging market trends and significant new product introductions.
  • Utilize strong analytical capabilities to enhance category performance.
  • Engage proactively with vendors to cultivate relationships and refine product offerings.
  • Adhere to established protocols for introducing and phasing out products, while recommending improvements where necessary.
  • In addition to managing national brands, identify and initiate the development of relevant private label opportunities.
  • Retail Pricing: Propose, establish, and oversee retail pricing strategies based on product roles and category dynamics, ensuring competitiveness while achieving budgeted margin rates. Collaborate with vendors to negotiate support and appropriate costs for key items.
  • Cost Pricing: Maintain robust negotiations with vendors to secure optimal costs and foster strong vendor partnerships.
  • Negotiate supply, cost, and marketing fund agreements with vendors as needed.
  • Collaborate with vendors to create compelling promotional strategies, negotiating substantial funding support.
  • Ensure adherence to promotional timelines and accounting protocols.
  • Conduct pre- and post-promotional analyses to refine future promotional efforts.
  • Coordinate with advertising for promotional materials and any additional support required.
  • Work closely with merchandising to enhance product offerings and presentation, determining optimal display and sales strategies.
  • Continuously optimize product range and space configurations based on market insights and new product launches.
  • Collaborate with merchandising and vendors to update planograms and meticulously manage major resets.
  • Engage in proactive financial oversight, reviewing profit/margin reports and sales data against budget expectations to ensure robust performance, making recommendations for necessary adjustments.
  • Maximize category potential by identifying opportunities and addressing weaknesses through thorough analysis of category performance, internal and industry sales data, and vendor insights, while reviewing best practices across trade channels.
  • Stay informed about performance trends, competitive landscape, and regional preferences relevant to fresh foods.
  • Partner with training and development to ensure comprehensive training and evaluation of all team members within the fresh foods sector.
  • Demonstrate the ability to collaborate across multiple departments for effective execution.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a business or marketing-related field.
  • 2+ years of progressive experience in QSR restaurant brand relationships or category management.
  • Working knowledge of the C-Store industry within food service or related sectors.
  • Proven track record of leading organizational change.
  • Experience in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willingness to travel independently up to 25% of the time.
  • Capability to lift and move up to 10 pounds regularly, and frequently lift and move up to 40 pounds.

Desired Experience:

  • 5+ years of category management experience with a focus on Food Service.
  • Familiarity with PDI reporting systems and data insight resources.
  • Experience in Proprietary / QSR / Food Service Development and Innovation.
