The Certified Sleep Technologist at the Institute for Sleep-Wake Disorders is responsible for conducting polysomnography (PSG), multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT), maintenance of wakefulness tests (MWT), home sleep testing (HST), and positive airway pressure (PAP) titrations for patients across all age groups, from infants to seniors, under the supervision of the Operations Manager.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for a Certified Sleep Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

1. Reviewing patient data in preparation for conducting PSG.

2. Connecting patients with the necessary electrodes and monitoring equipment for PSG and performing pre-test equipment calibrations.

3. Monitoring patients throughout the PSG and documenting observations every thirty minutes.

4. Detaching electrodes post-PSG and recording findings.

5. Keeping track of completion dates for each phase of PSG interpretation.

6. Ensuring all equipment is cleaned according to Infection Control protocols.

7. Scoring PSG, MSLT, and MWT in accordance with AASM scoring guidelines and forwarding data for physician interpretation.

8. Conducting monthly inventory checks.

9. Gathering data for monthly Performance Improvement reports.

10. Identifying equipment malfunctions and coordinating repairs or replacements.

11. Performing inter-scorer reliability tests monthly.

12. Maintaining a clean and organized work environment, including cleaning all surfaces at the end of each shift.

13. Participating in Journal Club and staff meetings.

14. Organizing patient charts and ensuring proper filing.

15. Reviewing sleep studies with physicians and staff.

16. Conducting mask fittings and CPAP trials for patients.

17. Engaging in health fairs.

18. Performing monthly checks on emergency equipment.

19. Utilizing the Epic hospital system effectively.

20. Assisting with the Direct Referral process.

21. Aiding in the setup of durable medical equipment for patients.

22. Completing necessary documentation for the interpretation process.

23. Participating in mandatory annual e-learning programs.

24. Undertaking additional tasks as assigned by management to ensure smooth department operations.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
High School diploma or equivalent.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.

New Jersey State License for RPSGT, Respiratory Therapist, or Registered Nurse.

CPR certification.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

For Trainees:
Registered Polysomnographic Technologist certification within 12 months of hire.
