Job Overview:

This role involves flexible work hours and laboratory responsibilities, which may include Saturday shifts. The position is situated within the Organic Chemistry Division, focusing on the examination of environmental specimens. Collaborating with Team Leaders, the role allows for moderate independence in executing assigned tasks.

Responsibilities include the preparation, extraction, and moderately intricate analysis of samples utilizing gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), or ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) in accordance with established methodologies for the specific sample type.

Ensures adherence to all quality control (QC) protocols mandated by the methodology and standard operating procedures (SOP), documenting all processes meticulously.

Engages with team leaders or managers regarding complex chromatographic data and spectral analysis to ascertain the suitable quantification methods. Conducts routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and adheres to necessary cleaning protocols for glassware.

In alignment with the designated work area, consistently follows DSHS Laboratory, local, state, and federal regulations to maintain a safe laboratory environment.

Responsible for inventory management, waste disposal, and other assigned tasks. Effectively manages sample loads and monitors samples to comply with required holding periods. Demonstrates understanding and application of job principles, essential functions, and requisite technical skills. Assists in method development and validation initiatives. Meets all performance criteria set by HHSC. Adheres to all HHSC and DSHS policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance and punctuality in accordance with agency leave policies, while performing additional duties as required.

Chemistry/QC:
Prepare and/or analyze samples for organic compounds using GC, GC/MS, or UHPLC. Verify sample preservation and container suitability. Prepare reagents and standards while monitoring expiration dates.

Execute sample preparation techniques such as liquid/liquid extraction, solid phase extraction, sonication, shaking, chemical reactions, and derivatization to comply with SOPs and Quality Manual standards.

Analyze quality control samples as per SOP requirements. Calibrate instruments and confirm standards with reference materials. Develop data acquisition parameters for target compound identification. Identify target compounds and interpret routine chromatograms. Collaborate with Team Leaders on complex chromatograms and spectral analysis for quantification procedures. Monitor Quality Control Parameters as specified by the methodology. Promptly inform team leads of any issues. Prepare dilutions to align with the analytical range of calibration curves. Conduct initial data reviews per SOP guidelines. Submit data for secondary review and approval before the expiration of holding times or assigned deadlines. (45%)

Sample Management & Productivity:
Maintain accurate sample tracking. Prepare and/or analyze samples to meet EPA holding time requirements without exceptions. Strive to meet and exceed on-time delivery targets by test and client, maintaining a productive rate based on historical productivity and work time evaluations. Ensure that extraction and/or analysis are performed in accordance with acceptable QA/QC and SOP practices. (10%)

Quality Assurance / Document Control / Records Management:
Comprehend and adhere to all policies, procedures, and guidelines outlined in the Quality Manual, USEPA Drinking Water Certification Manual, The NELAC Institute (TNI), reference methods, and administrative, analytical, and quality assurance SOPs.

Participate in training sessions. Conduct Initial Demonstration of Capability prior to independent sample work. Maintain proficiency in assigned methods through Continuing Demonstration of Capability, Method Detection Limit, and Proficiency Testing samples. Address any internal or external audit findings as assigned. Keep comprehensive, timely, and accurate records of all procedures performed. (15%)

Equipment and Supplies:
Operate and perform routine maintenance and verification of equipment as specified in SOPs and equipment manuals.

Maintain glassware by adhering to cleaning procedures outlined in SOPs. Troubleshoot routine issues using established policies, procedures, equipment manuals, and personal expertise. Manage reagents and supplies by following laboratory inventory control procedures. Submit written requests for supplies and standards to team leaders well in advance of need. Notify Team Leaders of any equipment or inventory concerns. Submit weekly requests for available LabSupply items. Follow SOPs for receiving supplies and verifying compliance with procedural specifications. Maintain complete, timely, and accurate records of maintenance and inventory. (15%)

Health and Safety / Housekeeping:
Consistently comply with DSHS Laboratory, local, state, and federal guidelines to ensure a safe laboratory environment.

Minimize chemical hazard exposure by utilizing personal protective equipment, adhering to management practices, using fume hoods, and following proper safety protocols in the laboratory.

Review and comply with the Chemical Hygiene Plan and SOPs. Properly label all chemicals and follow safety data sheet (SDS) recommendations. Wear safety glasses and lab coats in designated areas at all times. Accurately identify, label, record, and dispose of wastes and samples. Maintain a clean and organized workspace to reduce contamination risks. Attend all mandatory safety training sessions. Communicate any safety issues immediately. (5%)

Administrative:
Notify the Manager of all absences. Enter leave into CAPPS. Complete required training. Perform other duties as directed by the Team Leader or Manager. Assist in extracting and/or analyzing quality control samples for method development and validation projects. Provide suggestions and innovative ideas for enhancing performance and operations. May involve training others. (5%)

COOP:
Additional duties may include actively participating in or supporting the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

Such participation may necessitate alternate shift patterns or locations. (5%)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Proficient understanding of chromatography principles and their application to gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Familiarity with analytical chemistry techniques and adherence to good laboratory practices. Knowledge of statistical data analysis and its application to quality control.

Skilled in operating computer-controlled GC, HPLC, or GC/MS instruments and data acquisition systems for precise analysis.

Competent in maintaining GC, HPLC, or GC/MS instrumentation, associated autosamplers, and computer systems. Ability to follow SOPs for sample analysis, compound identification, quantification, and accurate documentation of results. Capable of working independently and collaboratively within teams to complete assigned tasks. Proficient in manually preparing samples and quality controls for analysis. Skilled in performing maintenance tasks necessary to ensure optimal equipment performance and managing required supplies.
