Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Chemist to serve as the Team Lead of the Lysosomal Storage Disorders Screening Team within the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the daily activities, resources, quality assurance, and operations of high complexity critical testing services performed in the team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Team Leadership: Oversees the daily testing activities of the Lysosomal Storage Disorders Screening Team, prioritizing work, scheduling and planning workflow, making assignments among team members, and overseeing progress of assigned tasks.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensures high quality of analytical reporting is maintained, performing and documenting periodic quality control review, including equipment maintenance and performance, proficiency testing records, temperature and humidity monitoring, specimen workload tallies, training and competency records, and supply inventory.
  • Instrumentation and Equipment: Maintains, updates, and develops Standard Operating Protocols (SOP) and training materials, identifies discrepancies and recommends, implements, and documents corrective actions and outcomes.
  • Customer Service: Provides excellence in customer service to internal and external customers, serving as a knowledgeable resource to laboratory personnel on difficult instrumentation and analytical issues.
  • Staffing Management: Assists in staffing management, monitoring and providing feedback to supervisor on team members' technical performance as well as staffing requirements.
Requirements:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory, clinical chemistry, quality control, quality assurance, and MS/MS and LC-MS/MS principles, techniques, and terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff.
  • Ability to work in harmony with other team members.
  • Ability to work as part of a team adhering to structured deadlines for completion of critical laboratory procedures that are performed in high volume.
Working Conditions:

The ideal candidate will be able to work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, with the ability to prioritize and organize detailed tasks to maintain required section timeframes. The successful candidate will also be able to recognize and solve work area problems, use, maintain, and troubleshoot work area instruments and automated testing equipment, and teach work area procedures to co-workers and guests.

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in a leadership role. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mass spectrometry, with experience in instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization.
