Job Overview:

This role requires flexibility in work hours and laboratory tasks, with potential Saturday assignments. The position involves working within the Organic Chemistry Division to conduct analyses on environmental specimens. Collaborating with Team Leaders, the chemist will engage in projects that allow for a degree of independent decision-making to fulfill assigned responsibilities.

The chemist will be responsible for the preparation, extraction, and moderately intricate analysis of samples utilizing gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), or ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) in accordance with established methods for the specific sample type.

All quality control (QC) measures mandated by the method and standard operating procedures (SOP) must be adhered to, with accurate documentation of all processes.

The chemist will consult with the team leader or manager regarding complex chromatograms and spectral interpretations to determine the correct quantitation procedures. Routine maintenance of equipment and necessary cleaning of glassware will also be part of the responsibilities.

In alignment with the designated work area, the chemist must consistently adhere to DSHS Laboratory, local, state, and federal regulations to maintain a safe laboratory environment.

Responsibilities include managing supplies, following inventory protocols, proper waste disposal, and other assigned tasks. The chemist will oversee sample loads and track samples to ensure compliance with required holding times. A solid understanding and application of the job's principles, fundamental functions, and essential technical skills are necessary. Participation in method development and validation projects is expected, along with meeting all HHSC Performance Criteria and adhering to HHSC and DSHS Policies and Procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

Analyze quality control samples per SOP and calibrate instruments, ensuring standards are verified with reference materials. Develop data acquisition parameters for identifying target compounds and interpret routine chromatograms. Consult with the Team Leader on complex chromatograms and spectral interpretations for quantitation procedures. Monitor Quality Control Parameters as required and promptly notify the team lead of any issues. Prepare dilutions to align with the analytical range of the calibration curve. Conduct first-level data reviews as per SOP requirements and submit data for second-level review and approval before the expiration of holding times or assigned deadlines. (45%)
2. Sample Management & Productivity:
Ensure accurate tracking of samples. Prepare and analyze samples to meet EPA holding times without exceptions. Strive to meet and exceed on-time delivery goals by test and client at a productive rate determined by historical productivity and work time unit evaluations. Extraction and analysis must be conducted following acceptable QA/QC and SOP practices. (10%)
3. Quality Assurance / Document Control / Records Management:

Adhere to all policies, procedures, and guidelines outlined in the Quality Manual, USEPA Drinking Water Certification Manual, The NELAC Institute (TNI), reference methods, and administrative, analytical, and quality assurance SOPs.

Engage in training and perform Initial Demonstration of Capability before independently working on samples. Maintain proficiency for assigned methods through Continuing Demonstration of Capability, Method Detection Limit, and Proficiency Testing samples. Address any internal or external audit findings as assigned. Maintain complete, timely, and accurate records of all procedures performed. (15%)
4. Equipment and Supplies:

Operate and conduct routine maintenance and verification of equipment as specified in SOPs and equipment manuals.

Maintain glassware by following cleaning procedures in the SOPs. Troubleshoot routine issues using policies, procedures, equipment manuals, and personal expertise. Manage reagents and supplies by adhering to laboratory inventory control procedures. Submit written requests for supplies and standards to the team leader in advance of need. Inform the Team Leader of any equipment or inventory concerns. Submit weekly requests for available LabSupply items and follow SOPs to receive supplies, ensuring they meet procedural specifications. Maintain complete, timely, and accurate records of maintenance and inventory. (15%)
5. Health and Safety / Housekeeping:

Adhere to DSHS Laboratory, local, state, and federal guidelines to ensure a safe laboratory environment.

Minimize exposure to chemical hazards through proper use of personal protective equipment, management practices, fume hoods, and safety protocols in the laboratory. Follow the Chemical Hygiene Plan and SOPs, ensuring all chemicals are properly labeled and safety data sheet (SDS) recommendations are followed. Wear safety glasses and lab coats in designated areas and ensure proper identification, labeling, recording, and disposal of wastes and samples. Maintain a clean and organized work area to reduce contamination and attend all required safety training. Communicate any safety issues immediately. (5%)
6. Administrative:
Notify the Manager of all absences and enter leave into CAPPS. Complete required training and perform other duties as directed by the Team Leader or Manager. Assist in extracting and analyzing quality control samples for method development and validation projects. Offer suggestions for performance and operational improvements and may provide training to others. (5%)
7. COOP:

Other duties may include active participation and/or support in meeting the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

This may require alternate shift patterns or location assignments. (5%)
