Job Summary

The Cardiovascular OR Specialty Nurse is a key member of the Wellstar Health System team, responsible for delivering high-quality patient care in a fast-paced surgical environment. This role requires a strong foundation in nursing principles, as well as excellent communication and leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinates Delivery of Perioperative Patient Care: Collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure seamless patient care from admission to discharge.
  • Maintains a High Level of Patient Safety: Identifies and mitigates potential safety risks, ensuring a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Collaborates with Healthcare Team Members: Works closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to plan and deliver patient care.
  • Maintains CPR Certification: Ensures current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Assumes Responsibility for Other Duties: Takes on additional responsibilities as assigned by management.
  • Provides Age-Appropriate Patient Care: Delivers care that meets the unique needs of patients across the lifespan.
  • Promotes Team Spirit and Positive Work Environment: Fosters a culture of teamwork and respect among colleagues.
  • Provides Supportive Environment for Students and Staff: Mentors and supports the development of nursing students and staff.
  • Serves as Professional Role Model: Demonstrates expertise and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Liaison between Physicians, Patients, Families, and Staff: Communicates effectively with all stakeholders to ensure seamless care.
  • Supports Fiscal Accountability: Contributes to cost containment efforts through efficient use of resources.
  • Supports Performance Improvement Initiatives: Participates in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care.
  • Documents Patient Care Legibly, Accurately, and in Accordance with Site/Department Guidelines: Maintains accurate and timely documentation of patient care.
  • Promotes Shared Governance and Evidence-Based Practice: Participates in shared governance initiatives and promotes evidence-based practice.
  • Functions Independently within a Broad Range of Surgical Specialties: Demonstrates expertise in multiple surgical specialties.
  • Maintains 12 Contact Hours per Year: Completes continuing education requirements to stay current in nursing practice.
  • Manages Assigned Surgical Specialty for Flow and Cost Containment: Optimizes surgical flow and resource utilization.
  • Strives to Make the Wellstar Standards of Gold Part of Daily Work Activity: Embeds Wellstar's standards into daily practice.
  • Peer Evaluation May be Required: Participates in peer evaluation processes as needed.
Requirements
  • Required Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s): Reg Nurse (Single State) or RN - Multi-state Compact, Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor, Advanced Cardiac Life Support or ACLS - Instructor or ACLS - Provisional, Pediatric Adv Life Support-Preferred or PALS - Instructor-Preferred or PALS - Provisional-Preferred.
  • Additional License(s) and Certification(s): As required.
  • Required Minimum Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience, with at least a year of Cardiovascular OR experience, to include CVOR Residents.
  • Preferred Healthcare Experience: Sufficient experience in a cardiovascular specialty to function in the team leader role and to serve as a resource to peers.
  • Preferred Skills: A thorough knowledge of new trends and techniques in Cardiovascular surgery, ability to multi-task using critical thinking skills, anticipates surgeon's as well as surgical teams needs, capable of prioritizing appropriate patient care in emergency situations, current CPR certification, participates in annual safety and infection control programs.
