Job Summary

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist provides diagnostic imaging services using radionuclides to assist in the diagnosis or treatment of disease. The technologist demonstrates knowledge of human anatomy, patient care, positioning, principles of nuclear medicine, radiation protection, and specialized techniques.

Responsibilities
  • Perform nuclear medicine exams in accordance with hospital protocols.
  • Administer prescribed pharmaceutical-grade radioactive materials to patients as outlined by state and federal regulations.
  • Demonstrate appropriate radioactive materials safety measures for self, other staff, and patients as outlined by state and federal regulations.
  • Explain procedures to patients prior to exams.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with equipment used for nuclear medicine exams.
  • Ensure availability of physicians for procedures requiring medication administration and supervision.
  • Perform duties to maintain department functions, including quality control checks.
  • Maintain required documentation regarding radioactive materials, both upon receipt and prior to administration.
  • Perform surveys and document findings of work areas, patient rooms, and radioactive waste storage areas at scheduled intervals.
  • Adhere to policies related to standard precautions, infection control, and radiation safety guidelines.
  • Work with the Radiation Safety Officer to maintain quality control and quality assurance guidelines to ensure all regulatory standards are met.
Qualifications
  • Graduate from an approved Joint Review Committee on Education Program in Nuclear Medicine Technology or equivalent.
  • One year of experience as a certified nuclear medicine technologist preferred.
  • Certified or temporary certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a medical radiologic technologist.
  • Certified by the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board or certified in nuclear medicine by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
