Hawthorne, California, United States SpaceX Full time

At SpaceX, we are driven by the vision of making humanity a multi-planetary species. Our commitment to innovation is evident in our ongoing projects aimed at advancing space exploration technologies.

ELECTRICAL DESIGN ENGINEER (STARSHIELD)

The Starshield program utilizes SpaceX's cutting-edge Starlink technology to bolster national security initiatives. Unlike Starlink, which caters to commercial and consumer markets, Starshield is tailored for governmental applications, focusing on critical areas such as earth observation, communication, and payload hosting. As an electrical design engineer within the Starshield team, you will take full responsibility for the comprehensive design, hardware testing, and lifecycle management of electrical systems.

This program is rapidly evolving, offering a variety of stimulating challenges from initial design phases to troubleshooting in orbit. You will collaborate with diverse teams and must adopt a systems-level perspective to ensure the feasibility of your designs. Our fast-paced development cycles require you to rigorously investigate solutions for complex, previously unaddressed challenges. Every day, we strive to push the boundaries of innovation, teamwork, and determination to achieve our mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assume complete responsibility for the successful operation of bus and payload systems in orbit through the avionics suite.
  • Engage in electrical architecture and design, including product requirements, component selection, analysis, schematic capture, and thorough documentation.
  • Oversee flight production, prototype development, vendor selection, and manufacturing processes.
  • Conduct circuit and product bring-up, debugging, troubleshooting, and qualification testing.
  • Ensure timely delivery of flight hardware while managing project schedules and providing status updates.
  • Facilitate integration, conduct full vehicle testing, support on-orbit operations, and perform data analysis.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary efforts with software, firmware, mechanical, PCB layout, and manufacturing teams to deliver a fully operational product.
  • Engage in system engineering to ensure designs meet all requirements without negatively impacting other teams or designs.
  • Drive enhancements in reliability and capabilities while optimizing cost and schedule.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or physics.
  • Minimum of 1 year of professional experience in designing and delivering electrical hardware (internships and project work are applicable).

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of professional experience in rapidly designing and delivering highly reliable products.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the complete lifecycle development of electronic products, focusing on new hardware rather than incremental updates.
  • Experience designing and implementing mixed-signal circuit boards from concept to production, including processors, FPGAs, and various communication interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience with testing, troubleshooting, and debugging electronic systems for at least 2 years.
  • Experience working on fast-paced projects for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Strong understanding of programming languages and computer systems (Python, C/C++).
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a cross-functional role.
  • Capability to thrive in a dynamic, startup-like environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space sector and human spaceflight.
  • Possession of an active Top Secret or Top Secret SCI clearance, or the ability to obtain one is preferred but not mandatory.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of an active clearance may allow for involvement in sensitive SpaceX missions, subjecting you to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Electrical Hardware Design Engineer/Level I: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
Electrical Hardware Design Engineer/Level II: $115,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also qualify for long-term incentives, including company stock options, discretionary bonuses, and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various discounts and perks are also included. You will accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually. Exempt employees receive 5 days of sick leave per year.

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

  • To comply with U.S. Government export regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees, or must be eligible to obtain the necessary authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

SpaceX is an Equal Opportunity Employer; employment decisions are based on merit, competence, and qualifications without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, or any other legally protected status.
