Position Summary:

In the role of Junior AI Systems Engineer, you will identify, shape, apply, conduct, and lead research initiatives that align with critical needs of the U.S. government.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field with three (3) years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in the same disciplines with one (1) year of experience.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to various SEI offices, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings. Anticipate moderate travel (approximately 25%) outside of your primary location.
  • Eligibility for a background investigation and the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance is required. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research Leadership: Conduct and spearhead innovative research in applied machine learning and artificial intelligence.
  • Solution Development: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to transform research findings into prototype operational capabilities for government clients and stakeholders.
  • Strategic Planning: Partner with Center leaders and colleagues to devise, implement, and execute a comprehensive research strategy while influencing the national research agenda regarding future technologies.
  • Team Collaboration: Actively engage with teams of software developers, researchers, designers, and technical leads, fostering relationships with researchers, government clients, and other stakeholders to understand challenges, needs, potential solutions, and research directions.
  • Mentorship: Enhance the overall technical capabilities of the team by mentoring and educating others, participating in design sessions, and sharing insights across the SEI Artificial Intelligence Division.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Technical Expertise: Extensive research experience in applied machine learning and artificial intelligence, with proficiency in tools, techniques, algorithms, software, and programming languages relevant to deep learning, reinforcement learning, statistics, sensor fusion, planning, and computer vision.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of engaging collaboratively and diplomatically with clients and colleagues. Ability to present complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Dedication: Proven ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple tasks, often under pressure and with changing priorities.
  • Creativity: A curious and innovative mindset, eager to collaborate with leading researchers and visionaries in the field.
  • Knowledge Base: A broad range of technical interests complemented by deep expertise in specific areas such as human-computer interaction, data analytics, machine learning, advanced computing, and adaptive systems.

Preferred Experience:

  • Demonstrated history of conducting high-quality research in machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a reputation for integrity and significant contributions to the field.
  • Familiarity with current trends and challenges in computing and information science, as well as opportunities within industry and government.
  • Experience leading research projects and mentoring fellow researchers.
  • Proven track record of successful research proposals submitted to funding agencies and leading the resulting initiatives.
  • Experience with government projects, particularly with organizations such as DARPA, IARPA, or other research sponsors.
