Overview: The Chief of Transplant Medical Services plays a pivotal role in collaborating with the leadership of the Transplant Institute to develop and sustain a premier transplant program. This position is tasked with defining the strategic and clinical framework of the program while overseeing the clinical and research activities of the medical professionals within the transplant institute. The Chief must exhibit strong interpersonal skills and a comprehensive understanding of the collaborative roles among various medical specialties and allied health professionals. This role is essential in fostering high standards of practice and cultivating a positive team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the leadership to formulate the overarching strategy, clinical direction, and research initiatives for the Institute, promoting both clinical excellence and academic advancement.
  • Actively engage as a member of the Transplant Institute Leadership Team, contributing to the Joint Oversight Committee (JOC) and addressing critical issues with the JOC and/or the Chair of the Department of Medicine.
  • Collaborate with Medical and Surgical directors of the transplant program to set goals and objectives for liver and kidney transplant initiatives that align with the hospital's mission and the Transplant Institute's objectives.
  • Ensure that transplant programs meet survival outcome benchmarks that comply with regulatory standards.
  • Encourage a cooperative and synergistic working atmosphere among the clinical teams involved in transplant care.
  • This role encompasses a balance of clinical responsibilities (70%) and leadership duties (30%).
  • Manage the daily operations of the Transplant Institute, including the recruitment and supervision of faculty and staff, facilitating meetings and conferences, and continuously evaluating clinical performance while managing resource distribution.
  • Work alongside program leadership to ensure adherence to relevant laws and guidelines established by regulatory bodies.
  • Assist in the development and achievement of the Transplant Institute's financial objectives.
  • Provide strategic guidance for communication and relationship management with referring physicians, and participate in outreach activities for the transplant program.
  • Foster positive relationships with colleagues, referring physicians, hospital staff, and patients/families to enhance operational effectiveness and satisfaction.
  • Stay informed on current issues relevant to the role by attending meetings and conferences.

Qualifications:

  • M.D. Degree or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid New York State Medical License prior to commencement.
  • Eligibility for a Faculty Appointment at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
  • Compliance with all credentialing standards.
  • Eligibility for Board Certification in Nephrology, Gastroenterology, or Infectious Disease.
  • Completion of a post-offer Drug Screen and Health Assessment.
  • Adherence to University and New York State health regulations.
  • Good standing as a faculty member on the hospital staff.
  • A minimum of five years of clinical experience in the medical transplantation specialty (nephrology, hepatology, or infectious diseases).
  • A solid academic foundation with experience in research or a history of involvement in transplant-related organizations.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Capacity to embrace and implement change.
  • Strong problem-solving skills for effective decision-making.
  • A proven track record of positive collegial relationships with peers, support staff, administrators, and patients.

The indicated salary range reflects the University's good faith estimate of the base compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined based on market data, experience, and expertise, as well as consideration of related position salaries. Clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process.
