Responsibilities:


The Phlebotomy Technician I is responsible for performing skin punctures or venipunctures on patients of all ages to collect blood specimens for laboratory analysis, under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor.

Key responsibilities include:
  1. Executing computer data entry, filing, and telephone communication along with other clerical tasks.
  2. Demonstrating knowledge of laboratory test terminology.
  3. Exhibiting excellent communication skills and professional telephone etiquette when interacting with patients and visitors.
  4. Applying proper phlebotomy techniques and utilizing equipment to collect specimens from patients ranging from newborns to the elderly.
  5. Processing specimens for microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank.
  6. Handling specimens for referral to external laboratories.
  7. Maintaining adequate stock of routine supplies.
  8. Ensuring cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and workspaces.
  9. Loading specimens onto automated laboratory instruments in accordance with established protocols.
  10. Assisting with sample collection from various departments and managing inventory and supply orders.
  11. Performing additional tasks as assigned by the department manager or director.


Qualifications:
Education and Work Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 45 days of hire and maintained thereafter.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience is preferred.
