Los Angeles, California, United States Project 180 Full time
Job Overview

About the Organization
Project 180 is dedicated to transforming lives through innovative, comprehensive services that promote community integration and prevent institutionalization. As a leader in forensic treatment, we provide specialized programs that cater to the needs of justice-involved individuals, offering a range of services from pre-arrest interventions to intensive post-release support.

About the Program
The Interim Housing initiative is a county-funded program under the Department of Health Services (DHS) designed for individuals deemed incompetent to stand trial. Rather than being placed in state hospitals or secure facilities, these individuals receive community-based competency restoration services. Our program delivers intensive, holistic behavioral health support across four transitional housing locations.

Position Summary
The Peer Navigator plays a crucial role in offering peer support and counseling, leveraging personal experiences to assist clients in achieving their recovery objectives. This position involves fostering community engagement and promoting independence in daily living activities. The Peer Navigator will report directly to the Interim Housing Program Supervisor and is expected to build meaningful connections with clients, guiding them towards their individual recovery milestones.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide peer support and counseling based on personal experiences.
  • Engage clients actively by establishing strong relationships, maintaining regular contact, and utilizing motivational interviewing techniques. Outreach services will be provided as necessary, meeting clients in their preferred environments.
  • Facilitate individual and group psychoeducation focused on recovery skills, emphasizing the core principles of recovery-oriented care such as hope, empowerment, and self-responsibility.
  • Deliver services in alignment with ethical standards and a trauma-informed, strength-based approach.
  • Share relevant life experiences when appropriate, particularly those related to homelessness, incarceration, and recovery from substance use or mental health challenges.
  • Collaborate as a member of the treatment team, contributing to the planning and implementation of clinical interventions alongside the treatment team and Resident Aides.

Enhancing Community Engagement:

  • Accompany clients into the community and assist them in accessing necessary resources.
  • Teach clients essential skills for community independence, including effective communication, navigating public transportation, and organizational skills.
  • Encourage clients to develop and actively participate in meaningful community roles, such as family reunification, employment, and community involvement.

Supporting Daily Living Independence:

  • Contribute to a recovery-oriented environment at the interim housing sites, guiding clients in navigating the treatment setting and promoting participation.
  • Instruct clients on daily living skills, including medication management, personal hygiene, cooking, and cleaning.

Project 180 Staff Expectations:

  • Regular attendance is essential, with potential for holiday or weekend shifts.
  • Adhere to the Agency's mission, values, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
  • Maintain necessary licenses and registrations as applicable.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Empathetic with strong communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Culturally aware and sensitive to diverse backgrounds and needs.
  • Collaborative mindset, capable of working within diverse teams to address complex challenges.
  • Resilient and optimistic in overcoming barriers.
  • Adaptable to evolving circumstances and client requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Required:
    • Personal experience with mental health or substance use recovery, or involvement with the criminal justice system.
    • Experience working with diverse populations.
    • Valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and access to a vehicle for client transportation.
    • No current legal supervision (probation or parole).
    • Verification of employment eligibility and background check.
    • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience with mental health, the criminal legal system, or the homeless population.
    • Proficiency in Spanish.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
None

Work Environment:
This role involves both office and fieldwork, including activities at Project 180's interim housing sites.

Physical Requirements:
Employees must be able to navigate the worksite throughout the day, which may involve walking, standing, and climbing stairs. The role requires driving, carrying up to 20 lbs, and effective communication skills.

Mental Requirements:
Employees should be capable of managing complex tasks, making decisions independently, handling routine distractions, and interacting professionally in high-stress situations.
