Job Summary

The Derby Public Schools is seeking a highly skilled Payroll Supervisor to oversee the development, supervision, and training of payroll processes and staff. This role requires a strong understanding of federal, state, and local guidelines to ensure compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct payroll processes, ensuring accurate entry of time and attendance data into the payroll system and timely payroll file transmission.
  • Approve and execute payroll adjustments, prepare and maintain payroll procedural documentation, and update as necessary due to process, law, or other changes.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual reconciliation of 941s, 5500s, and W2s, manage all Payroll related functions, and coordinate with federal, state, and local tax agencies and related entities to resolve payroll disputes and issues.
  • Manage the retention of required documentation, research and resolve IRS and statutory tax and wage garnishment notices, and exercise independent judgment and decision-making for all aspects of payroll.
  • Coordinate and assist with workers' compensation and district audits, assist management with budget and forecast processes related to payroll and compensation planning, and provide training on the payroll system to end users.
  • Prepare payroll-related communications for the District community as needed, maintain professionalism and confidentiality as expected, and perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 3 years of payroll or related experience.
  • Proficient to advanced knowledge of MS Office applications, specifically Excel, including formulas and pivot tables.
  • Ability to work effectively with others, strong communication skills, ability to multi-task, good organizational and problem-solving skills, and excellent computer skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, demonstrated ability to work independently, and preferred qualifications including a Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, knowledge of fund accounting and Board of Education payrolls, and three to five years of related experience.
