Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Safety Engineer to join our team at the Cal/OSHA Calibration and Inventory Control Lab (CALICO). As a key member of our research and standards health unit, you will serve as a technical lead for the DOSH program and the CALICO Laboratory Unit.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for selecting, maintaining, and using scientific measurement and personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the safety and health orders of DOSH.
  • Select and use third-party analytical laboratory, engineering testing, and technical reference services (TS).
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of personnel in CALICO and throughout the Division to ensure effective implementation of safety protocols.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of diverse and varied work processes in a variety of industrial sectors, including healthcare, manufacturing, and construction.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest safety engineering principles, technologies, and best practices.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in safety engineering, with a focus on industrial safety.
  • Strong knowledge of the California Labor Code, Title 8 Code of Regulations, and Cal/OSHA organization.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and legal decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively address large groups and conduct effective meetings, presentations, and trainings.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high degree of initiative and independence.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
  • Knowledge of available PPE, proper selection, and limitations, as well as respiratory protection requirements.
  • Knowledge of available sampling/monitoring equipment, methods, and procedures.
  • Skills to effectively research, evaluate, and analyze complex safety and health problems and controls.
