Position Overview

This role is integral to the Information Technology department within the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California-Davis. Reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer, the IT Director of Application Development is tasked with the creation and upkeep of user-centric, dependable, secure, and cost-efficient software solutions for students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders associated with the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

  • Application Development Management (60%): Oversee the application development lifecycle, ensuring that all software solutions are aligned with the needs of the organization.
  • Application Development (20%): Engage in hands-on development of software applications, utilizing modern programming languages and frameworks.
  • Application Development Staff Management (20%): Lead and mentor a team of IT professionals, fostering an environment of growth and collaboration.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two to five years of experience in managing an IT organization.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing multiple, complex projects through the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies.
  • Experience in developing web applications using technologies such as Java, .NET, or ColdFusion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and respect among clients and team members.
  • Knowledge of software testing, deployment, and maintenance strategies.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into business language, ensuring client needs are met with high satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated skills in process improvement and implementation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Secure Software Lifecycle Professional certification.
  • Experience in a higher education technology environment.
  • Background in veterinary medicine or a related medical field.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms and application development resources.

Work Environment

The position is part of a matrix organization that includes Operations, Application Development, and Project Management. The department provides essential services to the faculty, students, staff, and affiliates of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.
