Position Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Senior Clinical Exercise Specialist plays a crucial role in assessing patients referred to the Cardiac Rehabilitation program. This position is responsible for creating and executing effective management and treatment strategies. The role also includes additional responsibilities that foster personal growth and professional development for both the individual and the department. The Senior Clinical Exercise Specialist operates with a high degree of independence, overseeing the daily functions of the program. This role is also tasked with preparing and maintaining departmental records to ensure ongoing accreditation with the American Academy of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Furthermore, the Senior Clinical Exercise Specialist actively participates in the Cardio-Vascular surgery program and contributes to the planning and execution of the Cardiac Rehabilitation program as part of the broader CV initiative.

Key Responsibilities

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Foster a positive work environment, leading the team to collaborate effectively and achieve optimal departmental outcomes. Communicate pertinent patient care information comprehensively with all team members.
  • Act as a mentor and resource for other Exercise Physiologists, facilitating their professional development. Oversee clinical rotations, new hires, and interns as necessary.
  • Assist in establishing protocols and objectives to enhance staff performance, teamwork, patient safety, and customer service.
  • Deliver high-quality patient care as outlined in care plans, prioritizing patient needs and creating a supportive environment.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Conduct thorough evaluations of patients to determine their functional levels and develop appropriate care plans. Perform initial assessments for patients referred to the Cardiac Rehabilitation program.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with the inter-professional team, assisting in daily operational management.
  • Oversee workflow, caseload, and patient treatment processes to ensure quality outcomes and patient safety.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Regularly assess patients, monitoring progress towards treatment goals and adjusting plans as necessary. Anticipate potential complications and address them proactively.
  • Implement patient treatment protocols and best practices, identifying opportunities for improvement and contributing to departmental quality and safety targets.
  • Participate in monitoring and reporting quality and safety metrics, supporting initiatives to enhance the patient experience.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Utilize resources efficiently to maximize time and equipment use, guiding team members accordingly.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient education and procedures, including charge entry and reconciliation.

  • Promote skill development and performance improvement by fostering a constructive learning environment.
  • Identify personal learning needs and seek continuing education opportunities, maintaining an updated individual development plan.

Qualifications

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field.
  • Master's degree preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • A minimum of four years of experience in a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Consideration may be given to Houston Methodist employees with three years of experience and demonstrated progressive responsibilities.
Licenses/Certifications

REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) OR
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (AHA) within 90 days.
