Position Overview
At Houston Methodist, the Senior MRI Imaging Specialist is tasked with executing a range of standard to intricate diagnostic MRI procedures, encompassing both routine and specialized MRI examinations of considerable complexity.

This role is integral to the direct patient care team and demonstrates proficiency in all facets of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations.

The Senior MRI Imaging Specialist also plays a pivotal role in mentoring MRI Technologists I and students, leveraging expertise to facilitate training and educational opportunities.

This position operates autonomously, applying sound judgment and advanced clinical skills in challenging diagnostic scenarios and patient care situations.

The Senior MRI Imaging Specialist provides direct support to physicians during all diagnostic and specialized MRI procedures.

This role is committed to delivering exceptional patient care while adhering to established MRI examination standards and guidelines set forth by regulatory bodies to ensure optimal patient safety and service quality.

Engages with all members of the patient care team through effective communication, ensuring pertinent patient care information is shared comprehensively.

Mentors MRI Technologists I and students, enhancing their confidence in their skills and knowledge. Promotes accountability among peers to meet departmental goals related to retention and employee engagement.


Facilitates clear and professional communication (verbal, nonverbal, written) to ensure mutual understanding, serving as a role model.

Communication aimed at enhancing work efforts and resolving issues is conducted with clarity and professionalism, ensuring the highest quality service during every patient and customer interaction.


Service Responsibilities
Conducts diagnostic MRI procedures, including both standard and specialized MRI examinations.

MRI examinations utilize magnetism, radio waves, and computer technology to generate images of bodily structures, providing insights into the chemical composition of tissues.

Proactively evaluates, identifies, and addresses patient needs for adjustments or interventions to optimize care, image quality, and overall patient experience.



Key Duties Include:
1. Positioning, physiological assessment, procedure preparation, and technical adjustments.
2. Modifying technical parameters to achieve desired imaging outcomes while recognizing potential complications and limitations associated with specific procedures.

3. Assisting physicians during diagnostic or specialized MRI procedures, including maintaining sterile techniques.


4. Providing clear explanations and instructions to patients and their families at an appropriate comprehension level, utilizing both verbal and non-verbal communication skills.


Quality and Safety Responsibilities
Adheres to safety protocols and conducts all imaging procedures in accordance with established standards.

Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures, consistently practicing aseptic methods, and ensuring compliance with MRI safety and infection control protocols.

Complies with departmental and hospital safety standards, practices, and policies.


Identifies opportunities for corrective actions and process enhancements, offering recommendations to meet departmental and hospital quality and safety targets.

Reports near misses and inputs errors promptly into the appropriate patient safety reporting system to improve processes and identify trends.

Utilizes critical thinking to observe and proactively address patient reactions (e.g., to contrast media and medications) or potential outcomes as necessary.


Ensures all imaging equipment undergoes quality control (QC) checks as required and is in safe operational condition prior to use.

Reports any equipment malfunctions to management and regularly engages in preventative maintenance procedures; requests service as needed.


Financial Responsibilities
Ensures accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures, entering charges at the time services are rendered.

Utilizes resources efficiently, minimizing waste. Demonstrates self-motivation to manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks independently.

Growth and Innovation Responsibilities


Actively participates in special projects, departmental initiatives, or shared governance activities, seeking opportunities for continuous learning and development.

Regularly updates the individual development plan (IDP) to reflect ongoing professional growth.


Creates a positive and constructive teaching environment by engaging students and colleagues (MRI Technologists I) in valuable learning opportunities aligned with business objectives.

Education Requirements


Graduate of an educational program accredited by the relevant credentialing body for the required certifications listed below.


Experience Requirements
Minimum of three years' experience as an MRI Technologist.

Licenses and Certifications - Required

ARRT-MR - Radiologic Technologist - Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ARRT) OR

ARMRIT - Registered Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist OR

CMRT - Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist - State Licensure AND

BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies to safely perform assigned duties, as determined through ongoing assessments and evaluations.

Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, particularly those impacting patient or employee safety.

Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and colleagues, maintaining a customer service focus and applying positive language principles.

Capable of working independently and managing challenging diagnostic procedures and patient care situations, demonstrating sound judgment and advanced clinical skills.

Basic computer proficiency; operates multiple systems, including Hospital/Radiology Information Systems and office software for maintaining patient and exam documentation.

Exhibits strong interpersonal skills and teamwork capabilities with all levels of the healthcare team, ensuring excellent customer service delivery to patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues.

Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision, including organizing workflow and actively participating in problem-solving.

Company Overview


Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital, set to open in the near future, will be the ninth facility of Houston Methodist, incorporating the latest technology available from day one.

With an initial capacity of 100 beds (licensed for 276) and strategically located in a rapidly growing corridor, the hospital will feature advanced innovations implemented during recent health crises, designed to enhance patient communication with healthcare providers and families.

Although the hospital will not be fully operational until later, several services and specialties will commence prior to that time.
