Job Title: Part-Time Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills Training

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is seeking an exceptional medical educator to fill the role of Part-Time Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills Training. This is a part-time (50%) position, non-tenure track, and the ideal candidate will have a strong background in clinical skills training and education.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for all aspects of clinical skills training, including introductory clinical reasoning in the PCM courses.
  • Primary responsibility for staffing, supervising, and reviewing both staff and faculty participating in the PCM courses.
  • Responsible for recruiting qualified and experienced faculty as a part of succession planning for the Assistant Dean of Clinical Skills Training and the PCM course director.
  • Coordinate pre-clerkship simulation activities with CHIPS.
  • Provide content and instruction on epidemiology & statistics (epistats) using the foundations of evidence-based medicine.
  • Work with the Director of Undergraduate Point-of-Care Ultrasound to provide pre-clerkship ultrasound training.
  • Oversee all curriculum components of PCM (M1, M2, and M4 years).
  • Work with course administrators and the Office of Medical Education to integrate the PCM curriculum with the preclinical course content.
Requirements:
  • MD/DO degree
  • At least 6 months of leadership experience as a course director or some other recognized leadership role related to the medical student curriculum
  • Board-certified by one of the member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), preferably in a primary care specialty
  • Established record of clinical practice and clinical medical education
  • Strong organizational and managerial skills
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Documented ability to communicate effectively and work with students and faculty of UTHSC COM
  • Strong commitment to teamwork
  • Unrestricted credentials appropriate for a medical staff appointment within UTHSC, COM, and have been licensed previously to practice medicine
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with point-of-care-ultrasound (POCUS) and work with the Director of Undergraduate POCUS to incorporate ultrasound within the PCM curriculum and/or willingness to collaborate with ultrasound-trained faculty to integrate point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) instruction with traditional physical exam skills.
  • Training or experience in curriculum development, faculty development/mentoring, student mentoring, and performance evaluation of medical students.
  • Experience with innovative teaching methods such as interactive flipped classroom, large and small group formats, team-based learning, case-based learning, problem-based learning, medical simulation, and asynchronous instruction and evaluation methods.
  • Interest in medical education scholarship.
  • Participation in national organizations or committees devoted to medical education.
  • Emerging or established regional or national reputation if at the associate professor or higher rank.
