Position Summary

The Senior Health and Safety Specialist at Wilson Lumber Company plays a pivotal role in evaluating, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety compliance initiatives. This includes managing Operational Safety, OSHA Compliance, Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and ongoing adherence to Health and Safety standards. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in manufacturing settings and a commitment to safeguarding our most valuable asset: our workforce.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all facets of Health and Safety programs across the organization.
  • Lead safety and incident investigation teams at various locations.
  • Conduct Job Safety Audits for personnel and equipment.
  • Implement Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) assessments based on job functions.
  • Perform risk evaluations and propose strategies to reduce workplace hazards.
  • Develop Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) to enhance safety protocols.
  • Provide actionable solutions to mitigate risks and support employee safety.
  • Create and disseminate safety alerts and training materials, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Prepare timely reports for management regarding incidents and property damage, including root cause analysis and corrective action recommendations.
  • Guide and mentor department leaders in incident investigations to identify root causes and develop corrective measures.
  • Stay updated on safety regulations, accident prevention strategies, and related topics.
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) standards.
  • Collaborate with regulatory bodies as needed to maintain compliance.
Qualifications:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to various locations as required.
  • Ability to analyze data across the organization to identify trends and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Proficient in creating plans to present to management that address risk mitigation for personnel and operations.
  • Ability to work autonomously while contributing to the enhancement of job safety and fostering relationships with employees.
  • Established as a Health and Safety resource or motivated to become a subject matter expert in Health and Safety.
  • Experience working with Occupational Health providers and treatment options.
  • Experience in developing and delivering health and safety training programs for diverse roles.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Adobe, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with OSHA Recordkeeping and safe Return to Work processes.
  • Experience with Behavioral Based Safety (BBS) initiatives and promoting a culture of zero incidents.
  • Capable of delivering health and safety presentations to various audiences, including senior leadership.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety or a related field (preferred but not mandatory).
  • A minimum of 10 years of direct safety experience, ideally in manufacturing or assembly environments.
  • First Aid / CPR / AED certification is preferred.
  • Experience with OSHA and DOT regulations.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Experience with Workers' Compensation Programs.
  • Specific knowledge in areas such as Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Machine Guarding, Emergency Action Plans, and more.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • Capable of walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods.
