Role Summary

We are in search of a Senior Underwriting Director for our U.S. Managing General Agency (MGA). This position will report directly to the VP of Underwriting and will oversee a team of underwriters and underwriting assistants while managing a profitable portfolio.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in collaboration and leadership, with a strong customer-centric approach and a background in sports insurance. You will be joining an organization poised for significant growth and digital transformation. Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 7 years of experience in managing underwriting teams and developing a profitable portfolio. You will play a crucial role in achieving business objectives, including new business acquisition, renewal retention, pricing strategies, and overall profitability. The compensation for this role is competitive and commensurate with experience, ranging from $140,000 to $240,000.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Achieve profitability, retention, and premium writing targets set by the organization.
  • Make independent underwriting decisions within established authority and maintain thorough documentation.
  • Assist in formulating annual business objectives for assigned agents/producers, analyzing results, and ensuring accountability.
  • Lead and mentor a team of underwriters, emphasizing coaching, development, accountability, and succession planning.
  • Evaluate team performance and oversee the salary and performance management process within budgetary constraints.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of sports and fitness products and services.
  • Build and nurture long-term relationships with brokers and agents to enhance a profitable portfolio.
  • Exhibit strong analytical and decision-making capabilities.
  • Work within broad parameters on complex assignments.
  • Effectively communicate the Players Health value proposition and risk appetite to brokers and agents.
  • Drive organizational changes to enhance business outcomes and fulfill our mission.
  • Represent Players Health in the marketplace, engaging with key customers, brokers, associations, and regulators.
  • Establish and maintain new and existing agency and brokerage relationships.
  • Develop and implement actionable plans for continuous improvement in underwriting processes and client needs.
  • Participate in training initiatives to enhance the knowledge base.
  • Own team results with a commitment to personal effort and professional growth.
  • Analyze prospective brokers to assess risk acceptability according to company guidelines.
  • Collaborate with management on risks that exceed authority levels or require special handling.
  • Work collaboratively within the Underwriting team and across departments to improve operations and workflows.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of sound underwriting principles and controls.
  • Prepare reports for management review.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions with brokers.

  • Travel as necessary for team collaboration and client meetings (approximately 15%).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in Property & Casualty lines, with a focus on General Liability, Property, and Accident & Health.
  • In-depth understanding of Product Management and Development, including policy form creation and interaction with actuaries and reinsurers.
  • Ability to leverage data and analytics to inform underwriting strategies.
  • Strong project management, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Experience leading Program Underwriting Managers to develop profitable portfolios.
  • Proficient in creating and managing underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop budgets, rates, and pricing strategies based on profitability targets.
  • Experience working with Independent Agents.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Experience with Socotra and/or Salesforce is a plus.
