Position Overview

The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is in search of a Hyundai Bio-Materials Research Specialist to enhance the Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab. Established in 1937, the Nature Lab serves as a vibrant hub for students and faculty to delve into the intricate forms, patterns, and processes found in nature, fostering a deeper understanding of our connection to the living world. This environment is enriched by resources and expertise that inspire a multitude of art and design initiatives across RISD.

The Bio-Materials Research Specialist will play a pivotal role in advancing RISD's innovative material development in collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group. This position is integral to supporting faculty, departments, and students, providing essential assistance to ongoing studio and workshop activities that promote art and design inquiry rooted in biological and ecological systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate the research and evaluation of new and existing bio-based materials utilizing green chemistry principles, focusing on sustainability and circular economy practices.
  • Collaborate with RISD faculty, students, and staff across various disciplines (such as Ceramics, Design Engineering, Textiles, and Nature-Culture-Sustainability) on material exploration, recommendations, testing, and application.
  • Propose additional formulations and samples tailored to the RISD community. Work closely with Hyundai Biology Faculty and the Hyundai Biological Programs Fellow to foster innovation and experimentation in biomimicry as it relates to material research and development within the Hyundai-RISD partnership.
  • Design and refine material testing protocols.
  • Maintain comprehensive and precise documentation and archiving of material data, including procedures, protocols, analysis reports, and applications.
  • Oversee the upkeep of materials-related lab equipment and resources within the Nature Lab.
  • Supervise graduate assistants engaged in biomaterials projects at the Lab.
  • Enhance and manage the biomaterials resource library.
  • Assist visiting engineers and designers from HMG in material exploration, analysis, and testing.
  • Provide constructive feedback to HMG program participants.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Nature Lab Director, Public Safety, and Environmental Health and Safety to ensure a safe and secure working environment.
  • Support the Director with various projects, programs, and functions of the Nature Lab as directed. Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Guide students in their research inquiries and deliver lectures as necessary.
  • Participate in critiques and evaluations of HMG program student participants.
Required Qualifications:
  • Dedication to fostering inclusivity, diversity, and equity in fulfilling key responsibilities.
  • Proven experience with a diverse range of materials utilized in art and design, particularly bio-based materials, green chemistry, and sustainability through circularity.
  • Experience in higher education research initiatives.
  • Experience implementing educational programs with students and faculty.
  • Proficient in computer skills for maintaining records, schedules, and data entry.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively and adaptively in a service-oriented environment.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to cultivate an inspiring learning atmosphere.
  • Capacity to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Master's degree or higher in material science, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field focused on materials development and testing.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in physical, chemical, and/or mechanical testing, including weathering and tensile/compression tests in accordance with ASTM standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Training and/or experience in biodesign, with a demonstrated ability to understand and advocate for the integration of art/design and science in a natural science context.
  • Experience in processing raw materials for bio-based material formulations.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in formal or informal educational settings.
  • Experience supervising students or other personnel in an academic environment.
