Role Summary

The Arabic Interpreter embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, adhering to the organization's ethical standards and compliance protocols while meeting all relevant policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate medical and general interpretation for patients, families, healthcare providers, and staff, ensuring effective communication in accordance with national interpreting standards.
  • Evaluate and monitor patients' comprehension of conveyed information, acting as a cultural liaison when necessary.
  • Document and track interpretation activities following departmental guidelines.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple interpretation requests based on urgency and need.
Medical Interpretation Duties:

Provide interpretation services during various medical scenarios, including consultations, diagnostic procedures, and educational sessions, ensuring clarity and understanding throughout the process.

Essential Functions:
  • Communicate patient and family needs effectively to healthcare teams.
  • Screen and prioritize interpreter requests based on urgency.
  • Assist in resolving issues related to limited English proficiency within the patient population.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and healthcare staff, demonstrating respect and cooperation.
  • Participate in ongoing assessment and enhancement of interpretation services.
  • Engage in departmental meetings and training sessions.
  • Maintain accurate records of interpretation encounters, including relevant details such as location and duration.
  • Utilize software tools for documentation and data management.
Qualifications:

Required:

  • Certification in medical interpreting aligned with national standards.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in medical interpretation within a healthcare setting.
  • Proficient in English and Arabic, with strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in all interactions.
  • Understanding of cultural competency and healthcare disparities.
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
