MI Healthy Climate Corps:

Become a part of the MI Healthy Climate Corps (MHC Corps) and contribute to shaping Michigan's sustainable future. The MHC Corps is dedicated to enhancing Michigan's climate initiatives through skill development and leadership training. Members are deployed throughout the state to support the MI Healthy Climate Plan's (MHCP) objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This plan, introduced by the state leadership, aims to mitigate the severe effects of climate change, foster quality employment opportunities, position Michigan as a leader in climate action, and create a healthier, more equitable, and sustainable environment for all residents.

About the Host Partner:

The Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) is committed to promoting the well-being of our communities by fostering collaboration between public and private sectors to effectively advocate, plan, and coordinate services and investments that yield positive environmental, economic, and social outcomes.

MHC Corps Member Role and Responsibilities:
  • The Climate Corps member will assist in advancing the West Michigan Healthy Climate Plan, aligning with the MI Healthy Climate Plan objectives. They will also facilitate connections between West Michigan communities and relevant state and federal climate initiatives, focusing on Environmental Justice and supporting the most vulnerable communities.
  • Contribute to the execution of the West MI Clean Air Action Program.
  • Support educational outreach and restoration efforts led by the Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds.
  • Empower the community to access climate resources by organizing meetings, educational programs, and other activities to disseminate information effectively.
  • Engage in MHC Corps member development through shared learning and collaboration activities, including in-person convenings and monthly virtual training sessions.
  • Organize a community input session with their host site to gather feedback and further the objectives of the MI Healthy Climate Plan.
Evaluation and Reporting
  • Members will complete a Mid-year Performance Evaluation during their service term.
  • Additional reporting requirements include bi-weekly timesheets, monthly data reports, and quarterly narrative reports.
Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong interest and/or background in environmental issues, coalition building, community organizing, and communications. Candidates should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Applications is essential. Members are expected to adhere to the standard working hours of their host communities.

No specific background or education is required to join the MHC Corps
However, a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is crucial for success:

  • Experience facilitating discussions with individuals possessing more expertise.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently without constant supervision.
  • Proven ability to navigate challenges in professional settings.
  • Experience managing multiple professional relationships.
  • Willingness to work outside of standard hours to attend community events.
  • Capability to learn new software quickly in a dynamic role with minimal oversight.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must reside in Michigan.
  • Ability to travel to multiple in-person MHC Corps convenings across the state.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma, GED, or be in the process of obtaining one.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
  • Must pass the National Service Criminal History Checks, including a state background check and FBI fingerprinting.
Compensation:

Members will receive a living allowance of $35,200, distributed bi-weekly. Additional benefits include student loan forbearance for qualified loans, health care benefits, childcare assistance (if eligible), and ongoing professional development opportunities. Upon successful completion of service, members will receive an education award of $7,395. Members are expected to serve approximately 40 hours per week, totaling 1,700 hours during their service term.
