Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist II - Biochemical Pathology Specialist to join our team at ProMedica Health System. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing routine and complex analytical procedures, recognizing deviations, and providing interpretation following established standards and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Testing and Analysis
    • Perform testing and maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
    • Process biological specimens for analysis and evaluate and solve problems related to specimen collection and processing.
    • Perform routine and complex analytical procedures, recognize deviations, and provide interpretation.
  • Maintenance and Quality Control
    • Perform scheduled maintenance procedures and recognize equipment malfunctions.
    • Perform, record, and maintain accurate quality control records and recognize out-of-control results.
  • Knowledge Resource and Communication
    • Answer inquiries regarding results and factors affecting results.
    • Act as a liaison and foster effective communication between laboratory and healthcare team, maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Computer System and Training
    • Perform routine inquiry and data input on the laboratory computer systems.
    • Ensure accuracy of information in the computer systems and be responsible for corrective actions.
    • Instruct new associates and students as required and assess competencies of other test performers.
  • Continuing Education and Professional Development
    • Complete required number of CE units and mandatory in-services.
    • Maintain and upgrade personal professional development.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Doctoral, Master's, or Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
    • Transcripts showing 60 semester hours from an accredited institution indicating 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
  • Certification
    • American Society of Pathology (ASCP) MLS or Categorical eligible at time of hire with certification achieved within one year of hire.
  • Experience
    • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS.
    • Meet an alternate experience route for High Complexity Testing Personnel as detailed in §.
Working Conditions

Must be able to move continuously about the hospital and between workstations, and prolonged periods of standing. Must be able to tolerate exposure to disease-bearing specimens, odorous chemicals, carcinogens, mutagens, low-level radiation, electrical hazards, and flammable liquids. Must be able to differentiate colors. Must be able to move, lift, or carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs., 5% of the time. May have to stand continuously for the entire shift. Must be able to input and retrieve information from a computer.
