DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Student Life Division at Concordia University is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and fulfilling student experience for traditional undergraduate learners. Our mission is to support students in their academic pursuits, help them discover their personal calling, and guide them towards successfully completing their degree programs.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Graduate Coordinator for Student Engagement will enhance their leadership skills through various responsibilities focused on student participation and community building. This role is integral to the Department's objective of providing essential resources, enriching experiences, and fostering meaningful connections for Concordia's undergraduate population, in alignment with our commitment to serve others. The position collaborates closely with the Director of Active and Outdoor Recreation, as well as other members of the Student Activities team, which includes initiatives such as school spirit programs, orientation, student governance, athletics, and residential life.

This role also offers the unique opportunity to reside on campus and participate in the Residence Life on-call team for emergencies and interventions. The aim is to have a significant impact on student recruitment and retention.

STAFF RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports to the Associate Dean for Student Life in collaboration with the Director of Active and Outdoor Recreation.
  • Works in partnership with the Student Activities Team, Athletics, and University Services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Graduate Coordinator will engage in and develop leadership in the following areas:
  • Management of Intramural Teams:
    • Recruitment, Training & Development: Identify and train officials and staff, emphasizing officiating skills, sportsmanship, and conflict resolution.
    • Crisis Management: Respond promptly to emergencies during intramural events, coordinating with campus services to ensure safety.
    • Event Coordination: Organize and execute two one-day tournaments annually.
    • Extramural Engagement: Attend events in collaboration with other universities.
    • Marketing Initiatives: Promote and recruit participants for intramural seasons.
    • Equipment Maintenance: Assist in the upkeep and regular inspection of sports equipment to ensure safety standards.
  • Media and Marketing for Student Activities:
    • Content Creation: Generate media content to support university marketing efforts aimed at attracting new students and retaining current ones.
    • Collaborative Projects: Work with Student Life teams to produce recap videos and promotional materials from past events.
  • Support for Outdoor Recreation and Fitness Services:
    • Equipment Oversight: Maintain an accurate inventory of outdoor recreation gear, ensuring it is in good condition and properly stored.
    • Fitness Equipment Assessment: Regularly evaluate and update fitness equipment, aligning with industry standards, and maintain relationships with repair services.
    • Safety Protocols: Enforce safety and hygiene standards across fitness center operations.
  • Additional Duties:
    • Present at orientations for Active and Outdoor Recreation initiatives.
    • Assist in managing the budget and financial reconciliations for Active and Outdoor Recreation.
This position requires adaptability and the willingness to take on additional responsibilities as needed to support departmental goals. The incumbent is expected to approach new challenges with a proactive and positive mindset, contributing to the overall success of the team and enhancing the community atmosphere.

This role frequently necessitates availability during evenings and weekends, as many activities occur outside of standard working hours. Candidates must be prepared to adjust their schedules accordingly.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES:

Supervises student employees and personnel within the Active department, executing supervisory responsibilities in line with university policies and applicable regulations. Responsibilities include interviewing, training, planning, assigning tasks, and evaluating performance.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Enrollment in a Master's degree program is mandatory. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required, along with relevant experience or training, or a combination of education and experience.
