In-House Legal Counsel – Focus on Litigated and Complex Claims

This role is pivotal in supporting the General Counsel with a variety of legal initiatives, primarily concentrating on overseeing external defense attorneys and managing litigated claims files. The Legal Counsel will also serve as a vital legal resource for claims professionals regarding litigation and coverage matters. Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as a legal consultant for adjusters dealing with intricate bodily injury claims, including those in litigation
  • Collaborating with external attorneys engaged to represent insured parties in pre- and post-litigation strategies
  • Partnering with coverage attorneys to provide guidance on a wide array of coverage-related topics
  • Assisting outside counsel in developing litigation strategies for bad faith claims, class actions, and other litigation types
  • Helping to identify a diverse roster of external attorneys across various jurisdictions
  • Providing training for adjusters on the management of claims, particularly those involving bodily injury and litigation
  • Supporting the General Counsel in overseeing litigation involving the organization and its affiliates
  • Contributing to trial preparation and coaching company witnesses for depositions and testimonies
  • Attending trials and delivering trial reports to the General Counsel and relevant business units
  • Offering legal insights to appropriate representatives within the organization
  • Evaluating legal challenges and interpreting applicable laws and regulations
  • Analyzing legal issues and/or resolving litigation in innovative ways
  • Serving as a resource for the organization on compliance and other claim-related matters
  • Collaborating with business units to mitigate legal risks

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited institution with outstanding academic performance
  • Active legal license to practice in at least one state and in good standing with the bar
  • A minimum of 5 years of litigation experience
  • Comprehensive understanding of legal principles and practices pertaining to litigation
  • Strong leadership and management capabilities
  • Preferred experience in personal injury litigation or insurance coverage
  • Proactive approach is essential
  • Dedication to delivering high-quality legal counsel, adaptability in learning new subjects, and a proven record of active participation in team settings

Additional Information:

  • Employees are prohibited from engaging in any external legal business
  • New hires must discontinue all outside legal practice and involvement in lawsuits prior to commencement
  • Travel may be necessary for job-related activities
  • Irregular hours may be required due to workload and job nature
  • Compensation – Starting salary of $150,000 or more based on experience, plus up to a 30% discretionary bonus
