Position Overview

JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Educator plays a pivotal role in advancing the mission of Bedford Stuyvesant Early Childhood Development Center (BSECDC) by enhancing the lives of children, their families, and the community through the provision of exceptional early education and developmental services. This position is focused on fostering children's readiness for school by promoting growth and development across all areas of learning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and maintain a structured learning environment that incorporates age-appropriate schedules, lesson plans, and both indoor and outdoor educational activities, ensuring ample opportunities for choice, play, exploration, and hands-on experiences.
  • Create and execute weekly lesson plans that include tailored instruction in line with BSECDC's protocols and evidence-based curriculum, facilitating experiences that enhance physical health, social-emotional skills, language acquisition, and cognitive growth.
  • Recognize and leverage bilingualism and biliteracy as assets, providing support for children who are dual language learners through targeted experiences that foster English language development.
  • Ensure that the learning environment and educational materials reflect the diverse backgrounds of the children and families served.
  • Utilize nurturing and effective teaching strategies to cultivate daily learning experiences that encourage critical thinking, inquiry-based learning, STEM education, and readiness in literacy and numeracy, while promoting social-emotional development and core values of respect and compassion.
  • Implement positive guidance techniques to foster a harmonious classroom atmosphere where children learn to articulate their feelings and resolve conflicts amicably.
  • Introduce children to diverse cultural perspectives through stories, visual aids, and discussions, promoting inclusivity and understanding.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with all classroom personnel, including assistant teachers, special education staff, volunteers, and interns regarding lesson plans and classroom activities.
  • Build and sustain collaborative relationships with families, maintaining professional boundaries while encouraging their involvement and fostering open communication about their children's development.
  • Conduct home visits and parent-teacher conferences to engage with families and discuss their child's progress.
  • Establish and adhere to a daily classroom schedule that accommodates essential routines such as meal times, rest periods, and transitions between activities.
  • Promote oral hygiene education through daily activities, ensuring children engage in tooth brushing and related learning experiences.
  • Facilitate discussions around healthy eating habits during family-style meal times, ensuring adult participation to model these behaviors.
  • Conduct required screenings and ongoing assessments of children, utilizing gathered data to inform instructional practices and track progress towards developmental goals.
  • Monitor daily attendance and collaborate with designated BSECDC staff to address any additional support needs for children.
  • Support the tracking of daily meal counts for the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) as needed.
  • Maintain active supervision and appropriate group sizes and ratios at all times, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy classroom and playground environment by adhering to all health and safety regulations.
  • Demonstrate consistent attendance to ensure continuity of care for children and families.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, including staff meetings, training sessions, and workshops as required.
  • Complete all necessary documentation and paperwork accurately and promptly, including maintaining child files.
  • Adhere to all BSECDC policies and procedures, including safeguarding children from harm.
  • Comply with all relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations as outlined in applicable standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field, or a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education with NY State Certification.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office applications.

EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of two years of experience working with preschool-aged children.
