Position Overview

Job Title: Manufacturing Process Engineer (Paint)
FLSA Status: Exempt

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Engineering Manager (Manufacturing)

Role Summary

This position involves hands-on technical responsibilities in the robotic painting and production of injection molded plastic components for automotive interiors. The role requires providing technical guidance and leadership to manufacturing teams, emphasizing operational excellence on a daily basis.

Key Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the incumbent will be responsible for the following tasks:
  • Oversee all paint-related processes for new product introductions, including:
    • Creating efficient programs for 6-axis paint robots (ABB or Fanuc) to align with customer specifications, enhance paint transfer efficiency, and boost production throughput.
    • Developing paint processes for 1K and 2K waterborne and solvent-based systems using automated spray applicators.
    • Collaborating with external suppliers to design paint racks that optimize paint coverage while minimizing cycle time and waste.
    • Assessing paint rack designs to ensure efficient loading/unloading and safe ergonomic practices for operators.
    • Engaging with paint suppliers to ensure compliance with customer requirements regarding dry film thickness, color, and gloss.
    • Partnering with packaging suppliers to create internal WIP packaging that guarantees safe and defect-free transportation.
    • Documenting standardized work instructions to ensure best practices are consistently followed by operators.
    • Analyzing paint consumption and cycle times to meet customer demands while adhering to regulatory emissions standards.
    • Continuously monitoring and enhancing the above processes throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Support production teams in the daily operations of paint spray booths, robotic programs, and paint processes:
    • Diagnosing and resolving process or equipment-related issues promptly.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives aimed at scrap reduction and continuous improvement, utilizing root-cause analysis techniques such as the 5-Why methodology:
    • Documenting insights and sharing results with peers across the organization.
  • Conduct regular process audits to ensure adherence to standardized work protocols.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to establish preventive maintenance schedules for paint spray equipment, enhancing operational reliability.
  • Prepare proposals for new equipment acquisitions aimed at capital investment or cost-saving measures.
  • Explore automation opportunities in existing operations through PLC programming to improve consistency and reduce labor demands.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field, or 5 years of relevant experience in automotive manufacturing or paint coatings may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with independent thinking skills.
  • Preferred experience includes:
    • Automotive class A painting experience.
    • Programming experience with 6-axis ABB or Fanuc paint robots.
    • Familiarity with various 1K and 2K paint systems (basecoat/clearcoat experience is advantageous).
    • Experience in paint spray processing.
    • Knowledge of 2K mixing equipment (ABB integrated fluid delivery & IPS systems is a plus).
    • Understanding of lean manufacturing principles.
    • Design and layout expertise for paint spray booths and systems.
    • PLC programming knowledge (Allen Bradley preferred).
    • Familiarity with thermal curing methods including IR and convection (UV cure is a plus).
    • Surface preparation techniques such as flame treatment and CO2 cleaning.
Skills and Abilities

Ability to gather and analyze information to make informed decisions from limited options:
  • A minimum score of 50 on the Wonderlic Select Assessment (Traditional Score of 26 on the cognitive portion).
Travel Requirements

This position typically requires less than 5% travel.
