Overview:

The Certified Surgical Specialist plays a crucial role in the surgical team by performing a range of technical tasks to support the preparation and care of patients prior to surgery. This includes ensuring patient skin is ready for surgical procedures in line with established hospital protocols. The specialist is responsible for maintaining sterile techniques and actively monitoring for any potential breaches in aseptic practices. Providing comfort and emotional support to patients is also a key aspect of this role, ensuring their privacy and care needs are met. The position involves transporting patients to and from the Operating Room and positioning them appropriately based on the surgical requirements. Additionally, the specialist identifies and manages biological specimens and prepares the Operating Room by organizing instruments, tables, and supplies according to the specific surgical case.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Under the supervision of a registered nurse, executes all processes related to direct patient care and assistance in the Operating Room before and during surgical procedures.

• Proficiently scrubs in multiple specialty areas, including but not limited to: Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, and Robotics, is highly desirable.

• Establishes and upholds a sterile environment, passing instruments and sutures to the surgeon, and assisting as needed.

• Utilizes the physician preference card as a starting point for case preparation and Operating Room setup.

• Ensures that preference cards are regularly updated and comprehensive.

• Collaborates effectively as part of the surgical team to provide optimal patient care.

• Participates in team planning and execution of surgical procedures.

• Maintains a safe surgical environment by consistently applying technical and aseptic practices.

• Demonstrates expertise in the handling and care of all surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.

• Follows Universal Barrier Precautions to ensure safety for both patients and staff in all care situations.

• Exhibits competence in monitoring and managing the surgical environment, including traffic control and adherence to sanitation policies.

• Familiar with facility policies regarding decontamination, processing, and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies.

• Adapts patient assessment and care methods to meet the unique needs of each patient, considering their physical, psychosocial, and cultural backgrounds.

• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or an LVN/LPN program is required.

Experience

  • Preferred experience of 2 or more years in a similar role.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • BLS certification is required.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting must be obtained within 180 days of graduation or an active LVN/LPN License is required.
