POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision, this role involves working with young individuals while also delivering professional and technical library services. The nature of the work requires a degree of independent judgment within established guidelines and procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Physical demands include walking, climbing stairs, reaching, standing, bending, stooping, climbing ladders, and lifting items up to 50 pounds (more with assistance).
  • Work is conducted in environments where undesirable physical conditions are minimal and manageable.
  • Proficiency in operating computers, software applications, and other office equipment is required.
  • A valid Montana Operator's License is necessary.
  • Availability for evening and weekend shifts is expected.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential, as this position involves substantial interaction with colleagues and the public, requiring tact and diplomacy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage with all library patrons, including children, by promoting, planning, and executing programs and special events.
  • Design and deliver Storytime sessions aligned with monthly themes and early literacy standards, integrating current and emerging technologies as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement outreach programs for children during regular visits to local daycares, preschools, schools, and community organizations.
  • Organize and facilitate children's and teen activities within the library.
  • Collaborate with the Director or other staff to promote events and activities through social media channels.
  • Maintain records of program/event statistics and prepare reports.
  • Create engaging library displays and passive programming in the children's section.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings.
  • Assist the Director in implementing library policies and procedures.
  • Provide excellent customer service by greeting and assisting library users both inside and outside the facility.
  • Perform general circulation tasks, including check-in, checkout, and renewal of materials, as well as library card registrations.
  • Support patrons with the use of public access computers and electronic devices, such as tablets and phones.
  • May perform front desk duties and maintain standard tasks such as shelving, filing, and ensuring the library's appearance is tidy.

POSITION CONTINUED:

  • Advocate for library services to effectively meet community needs, both present and future.
  • Assist with reference inquiries and phone calls, as well as photocopying, scanning, faxing, and other patron services.
  • Carry out routine library functions and other duties as assigned.
  • Handle small amounts of cash as necessary.
  • May be responsible for opening or closing the library.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Generally none; however, supervision of children during programs is required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, supplemented by coursework in library science, early childhood education, or related fields is beneficial.
  • Relevant work experience with children and/or in a library setting is required.
  • Must obtain Montana State Library Certification within three years of employment and maintain it throughout employment.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Contribute to the effective and efficient operation of the library and its programs.
  • Develop budget-conscious programs and activities for children suitable for various age groups, both in and outside the library.
  • Manage disruptions professionally during presentations and events.
  • Accurately maintain program statistics consistently.
  • Foster and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, the public, and community organizations, including daycares and schools.
