Job Overview

The Geotechnical Engineer role within the Geotechnical Division is designed to align project services with client requirements by either executing or coordinating qualified personnel to deliver essential project services under appropriate supervision. The incumbent will engage in field assessments and evaluations, conduct laboratory analyses, review samples, perform engineering evaluations, prepare engineering recommendations, and manage AET project services for geotechnical assignments. Project services may encompass soil borings, pavement cores, groundwater monitoring wells, pressure meter testing, infiltration assessments, geotechnical instrumentation setup and monitoring, as well as load test observations and laboratory testing of soil and bedrock.

All activities will be conducted in accordance with the company's objectives and vision.

  • Draft proposals and comprehensive engineering reports.
  • Prepare and oversee fieldwork instructions, maps, planning, permitting, and project-specific requirements.
  • Identify and mark locations for soil borings and pavement cores, and conduct site reconnaissance and utility meetings.
  • Maintain effective communication with clients, project teams, and internal stakeholders.
  • Exercise professional judgment with guidance from senior staff members.
  • Conduct test borings, pavement cores, and install geotechnical instrumentation as part of a field team.
  • Perform field observations of soil and/or bedrock and testing methodologies.
  • Engage in geotechnical monitoring and testing, including instrumentation, settlement monitoring, load tests, infiltration assessments, and pressure meter testing.
  • Conduct laboratory analyses on soil and bedrock samples.
  • Analyze and interpret data collected from field and laboratory testing.
  • Compile reports detailing field and laboratory activities.
  • Interact effectively with a diverse range of individuals, work collaboratively within project teams, resolve issues constructively, and operate independently or within small teams in the field.
  • Execute duties in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as AET's QA and Health and Safety Policies.
  • Assess project complexity or conditions, recognizing when advanced engineering supervision or assistance is necessary.
Supervisory Duties

Provides guidance to field engineers, technicians, and drillers in coordination with senior staff.

Qualifications and Educational Background
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 0-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) registration is mandatory.
  • Understanding of fundamental engineering or scientific principles in geotechnical and construction materials, with the ability to apply this knowledge effectively.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex technical information clearly to varied audiences.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient in using personal computer software, particularly Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in data analysis and interpretation, accurately observing and documenting field activities, and reading plans and specifications relevant to the position.
  • Experience in determining and coordinating daily work schedules based on project priorities and client/department timelines.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration or the ability to obtain it is preferred.
Work Environment

This position primarily operates in a professional office setting but may also require fieldwork in outdoor environments on construction sites with uneven terrain and varying weather conditions. Standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers will be routinely used.

While executing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively. The employee frequently stands, walks, uses hands or fingers to handle or feel, and reaches with hands and arms. Occasionally, the employee may sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move heavier items. The employee may also need to push or pull equipment weighing up to 200 pounds. Frequent outdoor work is required. Specific vision abilities required for this role include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
