Emergency Communications Specialist

Overview:
The Tufts Department of Public Safety (DPS) is dedicated to ensuring a secure environment for all members of the university community across its campuses. The role of the Emergency Communications Specialist is vital to the Department's mission of safety, security, and preparedness.
The Emergency Communications Specialist will be tasked with responding to calls for police assistance, managing radio communications, and coordinating the appropriate responses.
This position involves the careful handling of sensitive law enforcement information obtained from state and federal sources, as well as notifying the university community about specific crime incidents and emergencies through the alert notification system.

Key Responsibilities:
Manage multiple tasks simultaneously, often shifting focus based on urgency and importance, including call dispatch, incoming service requests, and interpreting alarm data.
Dispatch police and security personnel to all service requests; oversee police radio communications and coordinate incident responses.
Facilitate radio communications and requests for assistance from external law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services as necessary.
Accurately input data into the department's computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system to monitor service requests, incident reports, and other departmental activities.
Monitor alarm systems and electronic access control events, dispatching personnel to address reported violations.
Maintain records, including filing police reports, logging lost and found items, posting public incident records, and completing shift task logs as required by supervisory staff.
Qualifications:
Essential Requirements:
High School diploma or GED is required.
Strong customer service skills and the ability to perform under pressure are essential.
Ability to multitask effectively due to the complexity of responsibilities.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
Must be CPR certified; training and certification will be provided if not already certified.
Must successfully complete and maintain CJIS Operator certification within the first month of employment.
Must obtain APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator 1 certification and NAED Emergency Medical Dispatch certification within the first six months of employment, as course availability allows.
Proficiency in computer skills, including typing, and familiarity with systems such as Computer Aided Dispatch, Mass Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) terminal, and alarm monitoring systems is required.
Must pass a psychological and medical examination, as well as a thorough background check including fingerprint verification against state and federal criminal databases.
Work Environment:
The work setting includes various computer systems, alarm monitoring equipment, telephones, and police radio systems.
The Communications Center is situated on the university campus within the police department.
Physical and Mental Demands:
Physical requirements include standing, walking, reaching, writing, listening, speaking, and visual acuity.
Mental demands involve reading reference materials and interpreting alarm and system data.
Candidates must be prepared to work in high-stress conditions and adapt to irregular schedules, including evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends, reflecting the 24-hour nature of the role.
