Primary Purpose

Responsible for operating heavy-duty vehicles for the transportation of equipment, construction materials, or waste. Ensure the safe and efficient operation of solid waste collection and transport machinery.
Essential Job Functions
  • Conducts inspections of vehicles and equipment before and during operation; performs minor maintenance tasks including cleaning, washing, and equipment repairs; executes brake inspections and adjustments; maintains daily logs and prepares necessary reports, reporting any irregularities or malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Transports waste from transfer stations to designated disposal sites; operates machinery to manage dirt and cover waste; utilizes compactors and graders to maintain road conditions at disposal sites.
  • Weighs commercial and non-commercial vehicles using landfill scales and maintains accurate records of activities.
  • Ensures proper care and adherence to established safety protocols in the operation and maintenance of equipment; promotes continuous improvement in workplace safety and environmental practices; maintains communication with supervisors and other operators.
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness of facilities, including removal of litter, snow, and dirt; responds to public inquiries courteously and resolves questions and complaints efficiently.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Skills:
  • Familiarity with truck operating systems and minor vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Proficient in operating heavy machinery and using hand, air, and power tools.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles including side loaders, front-end loaders, backhoes, and forklifts.
  • Capable of using two-way radios effectively.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions; maintain logs and prepare reports; perform basic arithmetic calculations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, along with a combination of formal training and experience in truck driving totaling at least 1 year.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Class A or B driver's license.
Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

Work is conducted outdoors in various weather conditions, with exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, allergens, and extreme temperatures. The role involves high-risk situations near hazardous materials and equipment; exposure to excessive noise; and interaction with potentially hostile individuals. Protective clothing and equipment are required. Physical demands include the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 100 lbs. Work schedule may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Random drug screening is mandatory.

Conditions of Employment:

The selected candidate must successfully complete a County-paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening, as well as a criminal background check. A valid New Mexico Class D Driver's License is required, as the incumbent will operate a County vehicle during job duties. All necessary certifications must be obtained and maintained.
