Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Residential Support Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring comprehensive care for residents while also maintaining the overall upkeep of the living environment.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

This position reports directly to the Manager and collaborates closely with the Lead Residential Support Specialist on duty to fulfill job responsibilities. The role involves building and nurturing relationships with:

  • Residents, Manager, Lead Residential Support Specialist, colleagues, Agency Nurses, Agency Behaviorists, family members or guardians of residents, Healthcare Consultants, DDS personnel, and community members.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. A High School diploma or GED is mandatory.
  2. Must obtain and maintain certification for medication administration.
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
  4. Demonstrated maturity, sound judgment, and the ability to manage confidential information.
  5. Proficiency in First Aid, CPR, PMT, Abuse/Neglect protocols, DDS Medication Administration, and specific medical and habilitative needs of residents is required. Attendance at all mandatory in-services and staff meetings is expected.
  6. Basic computer skills are necessary; experience with electronic health records is preferred.
  7. A valid Connecticut Driver's License and eligibility for auto insurance through Network Human Services are required.
  8. Physical capability to assist residents when necessary, including lifting and using approved adaptive equipment.
  9. Proficiency in the electronic health record system THERAP is required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Engage in providing all facets of direct resident care as outlined in individual care plans, ensuring proper documentation in accordance with applicable regulations, including:

  • Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
  • Goal-oriented activities from individual plans
  • Social interaction
  • Development of communication skills
  • Fostering meaningful interpersonal relationships
  • Enhancing self-preservation skills
  • Developing habilitation skills
  • Personal hygiene support
  • Transportation assistance
  • Serving as a positive role model
  • Leisure and recreational skill development
  • Cooking skill enhancement
  • Implementation of behavioral plans

2. Participate in routine maintenance of the residence as appropriate within the context of home management.

3. Ensure the safeguarding and proper management of residents' personal belongings and finances on-site.

4. Maintain accurate electronic health records for residents, including:

  • Periodic assessments of resident status
  • Daily task analysis charts specific to residents
  • Other daily records as directed
  • Ongoing communication among staff in T-logs
  • Documentation of medication administration
  • Tracking resident attendance
  • Maintenance records as directed
  • Any additional records as required

5. Contribute to meal preparation as part of the normal family routine, as needed.

6. Engage in continuous professional development through staff in-services and meetings.

7. Uphold the rights of all residents and adhere to relevant legislation governing community residences.

8. Comply with all policies and procedures of the community residence.

9. Collaborate effectively as a constructive team member in all assigned duties.

10. Maintain confidentiality regarding resident information and records.

11. Be available to cover for colleagues during absences, including emergency staffing needs.

12. Perform additional duties as required.
