Role Summary
The Adult Peer Support Specialist serves as an integral member of the treatment team, providing valuable insights into the recovery journey, symptom management, and the resilience necessary for individuals to lead fulfilling lives. This role emphasizes a collaborative approach, fostering a team environment that honors each individual's experiences and preferences.
Key Responsibilities
- Offer peer counseling and support, leveraging shared experiences to validate and encourage individuals in their recovery journey.
- Act as a mentor, instilling hope and empowerment in consumers.
- Facilitate understanding between non-mental health team members and consumers by interpreting unique experiences and perceptions.
- Provide expert consultation on mental health symptoms, medication effects, and recovery experiences to the entire team.
- Promote a culture of respect and understanding for each consumer's viewpoint and support their decision-making in treatment planning.
- Assist consumers in recognizing and combating stigma associated with mental illness, fostering strategies to reduce self-stigma.
- Collaborate with the team to ensure consumer rights are upheld and assist in navigating grievance procedures.
- Encourage participation in self-help programs and advocacy organizations that support recovery.
- Serve as a liaison to consumer-run programs, such as support groups and community resources.
- Share responsibilities in delivering treatment and recovery services.
- Maintain an average of 50% direct billable time monthly as per agency standards.
Additional Responsibilities
The physical demands of this role include the ability to reach, push, pull, stoop, bend, stand, walk, and lift up to 20 pounds. A valid Driver's License and a safe driving record may be required for job performance.

Health and Safety Training
All staff are required to participate in annual training on infection control and safety, including hazardous waste and bloodborne pathogens. New employees must complete training on managing physical and verbal threats and must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation within one month of employment.
Supportive Services
Assist in ongoing assessments of consumers' mental health symptoms and responses to treatment, recommending necessary adjustments to treatment plans. Provide direct clinical services in individual, group, and family settings to promote symptom management and personal growth.
Daily Living Support
Support consumers in various daily living activities, including finding safe housing, managing household tasks, and maintaining personal hygiene. Provide education on nutrition and assist with meal planning and preparation.
Social Engagement
Encourage socialization by supporting consumers in community activities and leading recreational programs to enhance social skills and experiences.
Advocacy and Coordination
Offer practical assistance in obtaining essential services, including healthcare, legal support, financial aid, and transportation.
