Camden, Maine, United States Points North Institute Full time
Position Overview

Salary: $130,000-$140,000 based on qualifications and experience

About Us:

The Points North Institute serves as a pivotal platform for emerging documentary storytellers. Based in Rockport, Maine, we unite a worldwide network of artists, audiences, and industry experts, advocating for the unique power of cinematic nonfiction as a transformative medium for community engagement and cultural evolution. Our initiatives include artist development and public exhibitions, highlighted by the annual Camden International Film Festival (CIFF), recognized as one of the premier showcases for documentary cinema and media art in the nation. Our dedication to fostering a more artistic, equitable, and sustainable environment for documentary creators is reflected in our expanding Artist Programs, which annually support over 60 emerging and mid-career filmmakers through fellowships, grants, creative retreats, and access to industry opportunities.

Role Summary:

In light of the recent transition in leadership, we are in search of a visionary and collaborative leader to assume the role of Executive Director at a crucial juncture for the documentary film sector. The Board of Directors has appointed an Interim Executive Director to oversee the organization during this transition, ensuring a smooth onboarding process for the new Executive Director. The incoming Executive Director will guide a dedicated team of 7 full-time staff members and over 50 independent contractors, many of whom have extensive experience with the organization, while managing an annual budget of approximately $2.1 million.

We are looking for a dynamic leader who is passionate about advancing and articulating PNI's mission, vision, and values, while fostering an inclusive organizational culture. The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in film, arts, large-scale event production, and/or nonprofit management, along with a proven ability in relationship building, partnership development, and fundraising. Strong skills in marketing, public relations, fiscal management, and strategic decision-making are essential, as is a commitment to creating systems that promote organizational excellence and sustainability. A collaborative management style that empowers staff to realize PNI's artistic vision is crucial, along with fostering a culture of trust and accountability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to fulfill PNI's mission and oversee the Programming, Operations, and Development Departments.
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team to ensure alignment with the organization's mission and values, guiding the development of new programs and ensuring they are well-planned and resourced.
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and foundation partners to secure revenue streams and explore new funding opportunities.
  • Develop a strong talent base through effective management practices, including hiring, training, and professional development.
  • Promote a professional environment that encourages trust, clarity, and collaboration.
  • Maintain a productive relationship with the Board of Directors, providing regular updates and empowering them in their fiduciary roles.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with key external stakeholders, including filmmakers, artists, industry professionals, and community partners.
  • Oversee the creation of strategic marketing and branding initiatives.
  • Represent the organization at various levels to enhance visibility and support.

Primary Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to the mission and values of Points North Institute.
  • Proven executive leadership experience in organizations managing small to midsize teams across multiple departments.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.
  • Experience in fostering an inclusive work culture and managing diverse teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate revenue and manage complex budgets.
  • Experience balancing the needs of various stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of power dynamics, bias, and structural inequality in cultural institutions.
  • Experience collaborating with creative professionals.
  • 5-7+ years in documentary film or related fields, with established industry connections.

What We Offer:

Competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical insurance, retirement plans, and paid holidays.

Application Process:

We invite candidates who are passionate about independent documentary film and media, and who are committed to nurturing new artistic voices, to consider this opportunity.
