Position Overview

The School Bus Operator plays a crucial role in safeguarding the health, safety, and welfare of students, staff, and volunteers during transportation to and from educational facilities and during excursions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers during transit.
  • Conduct thorough daily inspections of the bus, reporting any issues to the appropriate authority before transporting students.
  • Maintain adequate fuel levels in the bus at all times.
  • Adhere to all road and safety regulations, promptly reporting any traffic violations.
  • Implement procedures to ensure no child is left unattended on the bus, confirming all passengers have exited after each route.
  • Keep the bus clean and organized, following established cleaning protocols.
  • Regularly check and restock emergency and first aid supplies, notifying the Operations Director of any needs.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities related to transportation.
  • In emergencies, evacuate children according to established procedures.
  • In the event of an incident, ensure medical emergency protocols are followed and complete necessary documentation.
  • Assist with student recruitment and retention initiatives as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B with a school bus endorsement.
  • Previous experience as a School Bus Driver is preferred, along with strong communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a physical examination for School Bus Drivers, including a drug screening.
  • Compliance with background checks as mandated by state regulations.
  • Hold a valid driver's license in the state of Mississippi.
  • Exhibit character traits such as enthusiasm, resilience, self-discipline, optimism, compassion, social awareness, gratitude, and humor.
  • Present a positive image of the organization to the community.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity for operating the bus and conducting inspections.
  • Possess effective organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow procedural manuals and traffic regulations.
  • Capability to perform under pressure, especially in emergencies.
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a team is advantageous.
  • Respect for diverse cultures and backgrounds, along with flexibility, patience, and good personal hygiene.
  • Physical ability to sit for extended periods and perform tasks such as lifting and climbing.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and travel as needed.
