Key Responsibilities

The primary role of the School Transportation Specialist is to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of students, staff, and volunteers during transportation to and from school and during field trips. This position also involves maintaining the bus in a clean and operational state, planning safe and efficient routes, and keeping accurate transportation records as required.

Core Duties

  • Guarantee the safety and well-being of all individuals being transported.
  • Conduct a thorough daily inspection of the bus, reporting any issues to the appropriate personnel before transportation.
  • Ensure the bus is adequately fueled at all times.
  • Operate the bus in compliance with all road and safety regulations, reporting any violations immediately.
  • Follow established procedures to ensure no child is left unattended on the bus, confirming all children have exited the bus at the end of each route.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the bus interior.
  • Regularly check and restock emergency and first aid supplies, notifying the Operations Director of any needs.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • In emergencies, evacuate children according to established protocols.
  • In the event of an accident, ensure that medical procedures are followed and complete necessary reports.
  • Assist with student recruitment and retention efforts as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B with a school bus endorsement.
  • Previous experience as a School Bus Driver is preferred. Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to pass a physical examination for School Bus Drivers, including a drug test.
  • Must comply with background check requirements.
  • Hold a valid Mississippi driver's license.
  • Exhibit character traits such as enthusiasm, perseverance, self-discipline, optimism, compassion, social awareness, gratitude, and a sense of humor.
  • Present a positive image of the organization to the community.
  • Possess the manual dexterity required for operating the bus and conducting inspections.
  • Demonstrate effective organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to learn and understand procedures and guidelines.
  • Comprehend and adhere to traffic regulations.
  • Perform duties effectively under pressure and in emergency situations.
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a team is desirable.
  • Respect for individuals from diverse backgrounds, along with flexibility, patience, and good personal hygiene.
  • This role requires prolonged sitting, as well as physical activities such as lifting and climbing. Must be able to work a flexible schedule and withstand various weather conditions.
  • Alternative qualifications may be considered if they meet the job requirements.
