Sterile Processing Supervisor Job Description

As a Sterile Processing Supervisor at the University of Virginia Health System, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety. This position requires a strong leader who can direct daily operations, provide oversight, and implement policies and procedures to maintain a sterile environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department, including staffing and work quality monitoring.
  • Provide leadership direction and oversight for the development and implementation of high-level disinfection and sterilization policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Assure instrumentation, supplies, and other key resources are available in a timely manner to support surgical services and other dependent areas.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, such as the Virginia Department of Health and Joint Association of Advancement of Medical Instrumentation Commission.
  • Provide direct supervision to SPD personnel, including hiring, evaluating performance, and providing corrective action as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, management, and other stakeholders to ensure timely and consistent communication.
  • Assign and prioritize workload, evaluate and standardize operating procedures, and troubleshoot and resolve issues as they arise.
  • Review and approve time-off requests, monitor attendance and tardiness, and ensure adequate coverage for all areas of responsibility.
  • Encourage mentorship and facilitate career development of employees in the department.
  • Develop and implement departmental performance improvement activities and ensure ongoing staff participation.
  • Review customer feedback and implement beneficial procedural changes as appropriate and feasible.
  • Act as a champion of the SPM Instrument Tracking System and perform system administrator duties.
  • Utilize the system's reporting capabilities to identify opportunities for improvements within the department.
  • Ensure the physical environment is maintained and establish and enforce fire and safety regulations for the area.
  • Identify areas for self-improvement and actively seek opportunities to strengthen and expand skills and abilities.

Requirements:

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent required; Associate's Degree Preferred.
  • 3 years progressive leadership experience within sterile processing preferred, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • 3 years' experience working within sterile processing preferred.
  • Certification as CRCST (Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician) through IAHCSMM OR certification as CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) through CBSPD required.

Physical Demands:

  • Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive).
  • Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull lbs.
  • May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, vibrations, heat, noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
